Hydrostatic drive

I have a Craftsman YS4500, model#917,276901 with a Hydrogear #400506 356-0510 hydrostatic drive in it, with a foot control. Sometimes after using it for a while and stopping it, then resuming cutting, it would not go in to gear and makes a grinding sound when pressing forward or reverse on the pedal. Finally it will go in to gear and works great. Also, when this happens, I can pull out the lever on the back and I still can't push the Mower. Does it need adjusting. It sounds like an old manual car when the clutch needs adjusting. It is only a few years old. Thanks.
