at the first sign of blackspot and he uses Scotts Miracle Gro fertilizers.Good man there-lol.

Since this was on PBS I was sure he would ---------------deleted-------but he didn't.

Pete, that has been postulated here before, using Miracle Gro and/or some seafood/seaweed liquid to deter blackspot. As best I could tell as "how does that cure" (pretend it is gone) blackspot is that it would cause rapid growth, thereby push off the old leaves with blackspot in favor of new green leaves but in a couple weeks, wouldn't those same beautiful green leaves without an effective treatment, be either eaten by ravenous insects, JBs or become blackspot babes.

Hi Northwoodswis4 and Harvestman- Right, normally spraying Triazide and bagging would be redundant. But, what I should have been clearer about is that I do just one spray of Triazide to keep the insects off until the apple is big enough for bagging. After that, once the bags are on, no sense in spraying Triazide. Right, I would think that additional pruning to help with airflow would help as well, but so far, no luck with that. Yeah, my search for Indar found it for $211. Cheapest on Flint was $336. Ouch. Bonide makes a Mancozeb for vegetables, etc, but it's not rated for fruit that I see. (Let me know if you know of a brand name I should search for) I'm not sure I'm ready to go to Surround, so it looks like it will be the Captan. My apples in question have had more SB/FS than photo from elsewhere on the internet. Wow Harvestman... You think I could get away with just two sprays of Triazide? I'm already doing one. If so could you recommend the timing of those two sprays? All the work of bagging may not be worth it just to save one spray... and that second spray would help with my aphid problem (As I mentioned in another post, everyone else always says how minor aphid problems are, but I can never get control of them with just Sevin). All this is especially true if I'm going to start mixing in the Captan sprays to prevent SB/FS. Thanks as always guys, -Glenn

Dave: You are correct that apple pollination is a natural process that needs no direct human intervention, and certainly not any specific chemical spray (leaving aside products like bee scent, intended to attract pollinating honeybees). But if your neighbor's apples are reaching at least golf-ball size, pollination may not be her issue, but insects like the plum curculio and codling moth. Incompletely pollinated apples seldom get beyond the small marble stage before they fall off, but even well-pollinated apples, when attacked by insects, will eventually cease to grow and become small, scabby looking, and useless. I will be interested to see how your organic plan works out in a few years when your trees begin to set fruit. There are quite a few people, some of whom post here, who would dearly love to raise their apples "organically", but in the eastern half of the U.S. (and some say the western half too), raising apples with no chemical sprays at all is going to be a very tough row to hoe. Some highly dedicated organically inclined growers go to a great deal of trouble to cover their trees with a kaolin product called Surround, which can be somewhat effective against apple insects, but is not magic by any means. Others, like myself, conduct an intensive early chemical spray program, then bag their apples in ziplock sandwich bags, which makes further spraying of those particular apples uneccessary. However, the insects are always around, especially when there are unspsrayed or uncared for apples in the neighborhood with lots of dropped, damaged fruit. They represent the next generation of insects. You may even find that during the first years your apples are in the ground, and well before they fruit, they are attacked by leaf insects such as aphids, mites, beetles, and a host of others. Glenn - in response to your flavor question - Liberty tastes great in Kansas. Last year we had thousands of pick-your-own customers and Liberty rated highly in our informal taste tests. For 2009 we may have a mass "blind" tasting of varieties. Kansas gets very hot in the summer with a high amount of humidity to go with it. We will have several days (or weeks) on end in the 90s to lower 100s in mid-summer. That may account for some of the differences of opinion in the taste of Liberty. It's actually one of the best producers on M111. The only down side is that they need to be thinned for marketable size. We do leave about 20 trees alone for the school groups, boy scouts/girl scouts that come out. The kids like the "lunch box" sized apples. Freedom had very favorable tasting results in 2008. Our 10 Freedom trees are just starting to produce so I should have more comments in the future. We haven't had any production on our RedFree trees yet - I've heard mixed reviews in our area so I'm trialing 2 trees for now. A few JonaFree trees have produced and customers have not been very excited about the flavor. MacFree had a good response from the folks that said Macs were their favorite grocery store variety - I personally thought they were too soft and I prefer crisp apples. Arkansas Blacks are very disease resistant in Kansas but they're hard as a rock and have an almost pine-like flavor that improves with storage. Granny Smith has had no CAR but the flavor hasn't been very good.

HS may or may not be worth the trouble of finding a supplier unless you are in a marginal area or want the blue-green color. They've been harder to purchase in the last couple of years. You might try "Powder Blue" as well. In the east Sequoias get cercospora unless sprayed, but this is fairly easy to prevent. Another issue is simply heat stress in July-Aug, which will kill inner foliage as the tree tries to cope. Look for inner foliage on prior year growth turning orange-red and then tan-brown. Cercospora is a grey-black color turn. HS is not better at handling summer stress than the species. You could try watering in July-August to help with heat stress if it is very dry, but watering by hand is tricky. Do it very slowly--like leaving the hose to drip for several hours, and water on one half one day and another half on another day. Don't wait until the foliage starts dying to water, by then it's too late. Don't use mulch. Don't water within a week of substantial rain. Avoid wetting the foliage. Winter stress is either orange again or tan-brown. Tips can turn brown from frost. Trees exposed to the sun in winter suffer worse than trees that don't get sun in winter. Good planting conditions help enormously with stress in non-native environments for Sequoias. Good soil in particular. Avoid moisture extremes.

Even tho I'm not a blonde, I'm apparently much too dense to understand what's being said here . . . Did P.A.S. say to spray or not? If so, was the recommended spray for BS MiracleGro fertilizer?

Spraying *at the first sign of BS* seems idiotic to me. If you're gonna spray, then spray PREVENTATIVELY. If you choose not to spray, then don't allow a bit of BS to throw you into a frenzied too-little-too-late corrective mode.

Well, Hoov is usually right on and I believe a graduate of University of Georgia. Do we Auburn Tigers need to tell them how a real school of agriculture views these things.

(JMHO), P. Allen Smith (joking about his being a graduate of U of Ga), is using Miracle Gro at the first sight of blackspot. It does nothing to blackspot, but the rose will start putting on new growth, pushing off the old foliage and putting on new green foliage. That is a way of getting rid of blackspot leaves. However, the disease has not been eradicated or even suppressed; it will return to the rose in 2-3 weeks, but new tender growth is the salad bar for insects; they love new tender growth, so by getting rid of the old blackspot leaves and getting new ones, you are still going to have the problem of more insects if blackspot does not re-infect them before that occurs, so IMHO it is a futile process. Much better to treat the plant with a fungicide.

Pete 41 was in a flame war[albeit friendly] last week over spraying for blackspot.
A couple of months ago-one about miracle gro
So when a tv expert recommended both I was saying Si,Si.
