i ought to be far happier than i am . . . i sold my toro z master 100 zero turn to the first fellow that saw it (for top dollar!) . . . and while i miss it horribly, onward to the kubota sub compact bx1850 in my future (a true year round tractor).

i believe, turf tires are the way to go, though, i'm not completely certain.

will be be buying the bx with a tiller and after i sell my honda track drive snowthrower, i will purchase a front mount snowblower.

does it make any sense to get a narrower ag tire for snow traction (i've also seen many pictures of tractors with tillers attached and turf tires) i will be tilling up nearly an acre. . . admittedly clueless. robert a.

I wouldn't get turf tires based on your description unless you plan on using chains.

I'd get the bar (AG) tires. Perhaps your dealer will put on industrial (R4) tires which is in the middle.

You may not like what I have to say. I would have kept the Toro and rented or bought a tractor for the heavier stuff. Lug tires are a necessity if you are going to till but they tear up turf. I have an extra set of rims so I can use the turf tires for mowing and the lugs for everything else.

Glad to see others are interested Fruitnut I couldn't agree more, the are so many factors at play that actualy teasing out which are causing what may well be impossible. Virus is a great example. Drew I have to disagree with you on several points. The changes may or may not be significant depending on how many changes have occurred and where in the coding the alterations are. A single change on one gene can give us a new "sport" if it occurs in the right location. 1% would be HUGE deviation. I think the change is fatser than thousands of years...the rapid development of multiple sports on some modern varieties would seem to support that. Growing does cause genetic change. Growth is by definition cell division; and unlike animals, plants don't replace tissue they divide and expand outward. Replication errors during division are well documented in all organisms. And so since trees are growing out, those errors will inevitable accumulate so long as the cell is viable with the error. We also have external cause of mutation like EM radiation, high energy particles, and chemical substances. These I assume would be more random in their rate of occurrence, but possibly larger in the degree of change per incidence. As I said before "generations" is just the best phrase I can come up with. I don't think the cloning process itself causes mutation, but with each successive removal from the parent source a new "line" is being isolated and diverging in a different manner since most mutations and replication errors are random. I don't mean that each clone from the parent will be different, but that a clone is sold, grown out and the cloned again by somebody else, who grow it out and then passes a clone to another grower, who grows it out... MArc, I think our thinking is largely in parallel Canada plant, I don't know how to make it any clearer I am not talking about drift in a sexually reproducing population, isolation is irrelevant to clonal propagation. Harvestman, I think you are right, this is l;argly just an intellectual excercise for me. But surely tthere must be some research outthere on this...can a virus create a new sport? Scott, That is the experiment I was imagining. It would be a quite an endeavor to do well and eliminate as many of the variables as possible.. You would need all you rootstocks to be concurrent clones from the same parent source and you would need to attempt to get virus free stock or remove virus from those you get....and you would need enough examples of each individual scion grown out to remove differences due to "chance" growing conditions. As john pointed out early in the discussion even 2 identical trees may not grow the same. John, I don't know how many commercial operations select and choose their own scion to propagate. Nor do I know how many trees of a given cultivar commercial nurseries maintain for scion source. So I really don't know how much selection comes into play. Certainly it could be a factor. But for many of us we have one tree or one branch to cut and share scion from so there isn't much opportunity for selection there.

Pearl glad to see that you were able to take some time off and rest, did you feel better at all. we had a dandy day, and because there is no hockey on tv on sat. night they are running 3 movies back to back, the second is groundhog day, and i waon't watch the second one, godfather 2. but anyways, we have a tv station called tvo, kindof like your pbs, a doctor from texas as the guest (shows name is more to life), and he taked about the hurried woman syndrome -- which sounds like all off us! i can't recall his name - i watched it at 5 am on thursday morning! but he does have a book out by that name, he was interesting and talked also about depression, exercise and taking time for oneself, might be a good looksee if your library has it. (-29F right now and waiting for that snow to come p.s they towed our way and think that the spark plugs got wet with oil, cross your fingers it won't break the bank!) debbie

Liketolearn.. You were correct..what goes around, comes around. I just had a long talk with my lawyer and he informed me why the homeowners are so intent on trying to coerce me into continuing to work on their house. As I already knew, building permits have a cutoff clause which states that if there is no progress on the project for a specified period of time the permits are cancelled. When the original project came to a halt I as the plumber and the masons and framers all attempted to collect for the work that we had done to date. Having failed to collect any monies for over a year we then filed mechanics leins against the property, not that a mechanics lein usually nets us anything but in this case it seems to be working in our favor. It seems that the county will not issue any further permits until the existing mechanics leins are satisfied however, if the homeowner can coerce the lein holders into continuing on the project the leins would automatically be waved on the grounds that we have negotiated an extension on the original contract. If we, the lein holders do not re-enter into an agreement with the homeowner they are left with no option but to pay us in full plus interest computed at the prime rate for all work previously performed plus they have to pay all attorneys fee's and court costs associated with the project before they can obtain permits to continue their house. It looks like I may collect monies that I had long since written off so even though my vacation will be delayed a bit in the end it should work out okay for me.

The first time I accidentally came across SATC I was shocked, and embarrassed to be watching it with me in the room! Didn't finish the episode. One of the racier ones I guess. It was on free-to-air tv in Australia so I don't know how much it may have been edited. I've occasionally seen other episodes and thought the show might have been interesting. I made a point of watching the final episode. I can understand people following the show all the way through but it was on at a time in my life when I needed to be an expert channel changer so I just didn't tend to watch anything with that sort of potential. What has bothered me more is some of the stuff on SBS and ABC which has suddenly shown up in inappropriate timeslots. At least I had some idea SATC had a bit of a reputation, and it was in a better timeslot. (I've been told ABC and SBS don't have to abide by the same standards as the commercial stations.) I like Sweeby's comments. Popi, maybe your daughter was hoping for a conversation afterwards. I'm frequently shocked by the way increasingly young girls dress. But I don't have a teenage daughter so I really don't know what it's like for the parents to find the right path to tread on such issues. I suspect tv doesn't help, especially if the parents don't give some guidance as to what is appropriate viewing. I especially don't like it when parents put tv's in each child's bedroom.

I use turf tires for tilling and haven't had any problems. Of course I'm talking about a garden tractor, not a sub CUT. The only thing which should keep you from getting bar tires is how concerned you are about tearing up your grass while mowing. Is your yard more like a putting green or a pasture? You can always put chains on turf tires, but you can't smooth out bar tires.

There are as many folks out there that will insist you need industrial or ag tires to do what you say, and I'm sure they do work well, but in my experience, until you get into real mud, turfs work just as well. I'm a little concerned about tilling an acre with the BX1850 -- not that it won't do it -- but because it will be limited to a 37" tiller. This will take a while to till that acre. I'm not sure what size tiller the BX2350 will run, but I'd want to find out and consider it.

i've decided to go with the bx1850 for a couple of reasons: the tilling will be done in sections/determined by the infrequent amounts of time that i get to do anything outside/a dispensation granted only by the queen and/or my two girls (ages 8&7).
another major reason is the 2k price point difference between the bx1850 and bx2350. i am honestly stretching to get into the little kubota. again my property is only an acre and a half. were it to be larger, and dollars not a true limiting factor . . . i'd probably be looking at/driving a deere 2305.
about the tiller. . . i have yet to do my homework. i will have to reconcile the differences between kubota, befco and king kutter. thank you all for your input. robert a. aloha

congrats on your decision! I've never heard anyone be sorry for buying a Kubota. Post a pic when you get your tractor.

Congrats on your new machine, regular maintance, a little TLC, and lots of common sense you and it should have a long a trouble free relationship. I have a 48" tiller for the back of my ole 1855MF that it handles real well. One thing I did figure out was that if I use a moulboard plow first then till I get a real nice garden. Fall plow it and then till in the spring. I have ag tires on my mowing tractor and the only time you'll tear up the grass is if you spin them. Turf tires work good as long as you don't get into mud. I don't have to contend with snow down here but would think 4whl drive would be the best for that reguardless of tire design.

I have ag tires on my mowing tractors as well, and I've torn up less turf with them than with turf tires because they don't spin as readily. My old yard had lots of little hills in it and lots of obstacles, and I was constantly spinning and leaving bare spots in the grass by shifting from forward to reverse frequently to get around the obstacles, and if I happened to be facing downhill when I tried to reverse, I could pretty much guarantee that I'd leave a bare spot in the yard. Once the ag tires were installed, the spinning pretty much ceased to be an issue.

I myself just purchased a BX1850 with a FEL,54 deck, ballast box, with turf tires.So far moving dirt even in the mud i have not gotten stuck.I will be using the FEL to move snow in the winter and from what i see from this machine so far is it can handle more than you think.The 4wd makes all the difference.For a all purpose machine the turf tires will work just fine.For now i have nothing bad to say about this little orange machine.
