Gas in my engine oil
Comments (3)Yep, fix it immediately, unless you like the sound of fireworks, as that is what you will hear--a big "BANG", and then no sounds from the engine, except for a clunking, clanging sound, and no work done ever again by that engine. You will probably be able to look intto the block and see the damage, with no disassembly required! BT/DT/RJ I picked a brand new chipper out of the garbage one morning, that had a block inspection hole in it. And, some connecting rod pieces fell out of it. Upon further inspection, i found no traces of oil ever having been in it! I surmised that the guy bought it brand new, brought it home, and in his fervor to try it out, installed the gasoline, but no oil! BANG! A hardware store owner gave me a new power mower that he had sold to a man, who promptly brought it back, complaining that the oil was "watery". The store man couldn't resell it, so i got it. Took it home, installed new oil and fuel, and it started and ran well. I sold it, and kept track of it. It was looking rather ratty after 10 years of use, but i resold it for $25, just last year. Comments (6)FYI (means: For your information) there are marks on the bottom end/ side of the dip-stick that show you when you have enough oil in the engine. This provided you have the machine on a flat, level surface! So, here's how we all do it: After you have drained out the oil, replace the drain plug, or turn the shut-off valve to "closed" position. Then sit down beside the engine, on the dip-stick side, and pour in several ounces of oil. Try the dip-stick check, by inserting it all the way down the tube, then take it out and look at it. If it needs more oil, put some more in it, then check it again. (By more oil, i don't mean the whole quart at one time !!!) add it sparingly, until it reaches the full mark on the dip-stick. You may have to wait between dip-stick insertions, until the oil has a chance to run down and settle. Just be sure you wipe the stick off between insertions. A question: Does anybody younger than sixty know how to check the oil in any type of engine that has a sump, or oil pan? Do they know, or even see those little marks on the dip-stick? Or, what they mean? Several folks have told me how their engine became "oil-bound". "Well, i just filled it to the top of the dipstick tube, until it wouldn't take any more!" Comments (14)Kohler 12 050 01 oil filter substitutes: Fram PH3614, Supertech ST3614, Motorcraft FL-910-S, Purolator L10241. These have essentially the same size rubber gasket, same diameter body, same height, and have the same 3/4-16 thread. The 12 050 01 filter is used on 18hp Kohler Courage SV471-SV601 & SV541 and others. The Fram PH3614 is also used on 2003 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 liter V6 engine, which may help you find other substitutes. The substitutes have worked fine for me and I see no reason to pay more for the Kohler oil filter. I can buy three Supertechs for the price of one Kohler. I change oil and filter at beginning of the season, when the oil has about 100 hours on it from previous season....See MoreCraftsman Kohler CV15S-41526 gas in oil pan
Comments (1)It indicates the needle/seat assembly in the carb is not sealing. Probably a piece of crud holding it open....See Morercmoser
