Only foliage growth on 2 OGRs

I planted 3 OGRs this year and 2 of them, RdV and Reine Victoria, have had some good foliage growth recently but no flowers. I am glad for the growth but just wondering if I overfertilized them (nitrogen) or something. Or is this type of growth "normal" for the first year?

I put down RoseTone in last May and also used a weak liquid fertilizer a couple of times. Should I quit fertilizing? The other OGR, Mutabilis, has been treated exactly the same but has put out a few flowers.

Are these once bloomers? What cultivars were they? When did you plant them? Typically, my once bloomers don't bloom the first year.

I didn't think so...one is a Bourbon and the other an HP. They were planted about 6 weeks ago, I would say. They did bloom with maybe one or two flowers but it was a while ago.

I've had this paniculata for a couple of years and have been debating whether I should chop it or not. Last week I was brushing up on my bonsai styles while making a few pots and had an idea. Literati style, 4in pot that I made curious, Did your unknown plant flower yet? if so what color are the flowers? this my ventricosus It's hard to make judgment on species by appearance because of it being grown under artificial light. It could very well be ventricosus but the foliage doesn't match. Another possibility is grandiflora as it tends to branch at the base also. Here's an unknown of mine that looks similar but it doesn't branch at the base.

Yep, I agree - no fuss, no muss. Half of mine died to the ground over the winter, and as soon as they woke up they were off running - covered in blooms. Had a BBQ the 4th of July, and out of all my plants (I'm a perennial nut), the Endless Summers garnered the most comments.

Wow Missy, I couldn't imagine another rose looking that much like it and not being it. On HMF it says "occasional repeat" What does that mean? Occacionally blooming throughout the year, or sometimes you get another flush of blooms that year? Thank you everyone! - Paul

I have mixed feelings about Le Vesuve. It really does bloom all the time, but here the foliage, while never heavily diseased, generally has a look of being less than fresh. It makes me think of a person who has a constant cold but never actually develops pneumonia. I'd certainly keep it in my imaginary 50 rose garden, but not in my imaginary dozen rose garden. Still I can see why people might choose it for its excellent qualities Roses that for me have similar qualities would include Rosette Delizy and Marie Pavié. Near constant bloom and healthy foliage -- and fewer prickles than Le Vesuve does. You should have seen me last month crawling on the ground under Le Vesuve and its thorns, pruning out dead wood, and intermittently exclaiming words that would have made my mother wince. Given that I live next door to a residence house for Catholic priests, you'd think I'd learn to guard my tongue a little better.

If they were only planted 6 weeks ago, I wouldn't be pushing them with fertilizer.
At that stage of the game, I not infrequently remove any buds they do produce.
They'll bloom when they have enough root and substance.

Reine des Violettes did not bloom much in its first year for me. In it's second year, it bloomed sporadically throughout the season. In its third year, it is a much more steady bloomer. It will never bloom as much as, say a 'Mutabilis', but eventually has pretty good repeat for a hybrid perpetual.

My RdV is in it's 2nd full year and has sporadic blooms. Of course the drought has a lot to do with it too. It's in a spot that's hard to water by hand a lot.

In general Bourbons and HPs dont bloom continuously--spring flush and a smaller fall flush with a few blooms between. The Chinas bloom much more often. My Mutablis is nearly continuous. And again the adage: First year sleeps, second year creeps, third year leaps.

The few Bourbons and HPs I have don't rebloom profusely like most of my Austins. I have had some planted the first year that did not bloom at all. You can consider yourself lucky you got to see any flowers this year. You may see some more later in the fall.

Ah, I didn't know that. Speaking of sleeping the first year, my Cramoisi Superier is in a Coma.

Gosh -- I'd have thought Cramoisi would bloom, at least SOME.
