Comments (6)Trees like southern magnolias cannot be turned in vines. Vines however can be turned into trees an example would be wisteria. You mentioned that you always see southern magnolias up agaist houses. This is because many homes leak heat during the winter raising the temperature around the foundation by a few degrees giving extra protection to the tree. The home itself also acts like a barrier to high winds. If you want a southern magnolia i would recommend the Pocono cultivar. Its smaller, is more cold hardy, it flowers more, and doesnt get winter burn. I have seen the origninal specimen and it looks quite nice. You can order this tree from rarefinds nursery....See Morewhere to find an Edith Bogue Southern Magnolia
Comments (6)hi one indication that what you read is NOT correct.. might be the fact that no local nursery carries them ... dont you think ... not much help??? ... lol ... southern mail order suppliers make all kinds of ALLEGED zone claims .... that may or not hold true in the great white north ... there is THEORY.. and then there is reality ... in reality .. it will .. most likely ... all depend on your little micro climate ... and it seems you know this.. when you say you want to 'TRY' .... have you ever seen one locally???? you might try contacting The Chicago Botanic Garden and seeing what their thoughts are in this regard .... i am also aware that Hidden Lakes Gardens in Tipton MI [just SW of ann arbor] has a magnolia collection .... see link .... you might want to contact them as they should be close in zone to you ... and see if they have any southern magnolia .... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreEdith Bogue Magnolia
Comments (1)Where did you get it from? I'm in SW Pa and there are not many nurseries here other than big box stores that sell trees. Anyway, I have a plain southern mag (evergreen) that remained evergreen last winter, I would'nt worry about one that is said to be more cold hardy than the plain evergreen Magnolia Grandifolia. As far as staking I would stake high and give it room to move back and forth a bit. Using 2 stakes and a loose rope/string....See MoreMy lovely Edith Bogue southern magnolia tree !
Comments (8)I feel your pain Glenn ! We both know why the magnolia blossom is the state flower of both Louisiana and Mississippi don't we ? :o) I bought this tree ( at around 16 ft tall ) 5 yrs ago this month, (not 9 1/2 yrs as stated above ), and had it delivered & planted by 2 guys using their truck's big crane,..the root ball alone was humongous ! I originally wanted a Bracken's Brown Beauty because IMHO, it was the most beautiful southern magnolia tree out there, mainly because it had denser and more symetrical foliage ! But this was the only one available in that size, at that particular time. Cost a bundle for the tree plus planting, so after it was in the ground, was a bit self critical for not waiting around for a BBB to show up. However, a year or so later I read an article that the Edith Bogue trees, although initially not as dense with branches/ leaves, would start to get denser as it grew. Sure enough, it is now, ( at over 21 ft tall ), just as compact, robust and symetrical looking as the best Bracken's Brown Beauty I have ever seen ! Minimum care required, just 7, 8 handfuls of 6 - 6 - 6 fertilizer 3 X a year & occasional watering whenever Mother Nature gets lazy. Couldn't be more satisfied, - being where it is, I see it all the time. Especially whenever I get into or out of my truck at this time of year, - just cannot help but smile.
