Craftsman DLT 2000 won't go forward/reverse

I have checked to make sure the belt is still on the pulleys and it seems to be alright. I pulled on the belt and all of the pulleys seemed to be working properly. The brake/clutch doesn't have any resistance. I tried to follow the brake rod back to see if there was any springs broken but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Is there some mechanism that keeps some sort of tension on the pulleys when the brake is disengaged. This seems to be where the problem might reside. The manual doesn't say a whole lot about fixing the problem other than the normal stuff. Engine runs fine. I look forward to hearing from all of you experts. Fall is coming and I have lots of hardwoods. This is the busy time of year for me.

check the connection of the shifter rod to transmission. Check the foot pedal to see if it is rusted and not moving. check the brake mechanism on the right front side of the transmission. It might be stuck on!

Another thing--did you have the back wheels off recently? Did you insert the axle keys when re-installing the wheels!?

First: If the battery is more than two years old, it could be the battery. They are good for two years, plus several more starts, then they do a belly-flop, and you have to buy a new one! Second: If your engine is the over-head valve type, have the valves adjusted. Valves out of adjustment can cause your problem. Third: Remove the engine flywheel shroud, and remove any mouse nests under it, and clean out the spaces between the fins. Blow out anything in that area with compressed air. Make sure the switch that turns on the mower blades is in the "off" position. Fourth: Check and clean all battery connections, including where the negative (-) cable attaches to the frame, or wherever. Fifth. Look for the little flat fuse holder, should be near the starter solenoid area. Look for a blown fuse. If all else fails, seek professional help. DO NOT buy anything, unless a professional fixer has first inspected it! HTH: Rusty Jones

Went to the Sears direct website (click link below) to view IPL. Looking at IPL I see that item 22 (shift lever) is supposed to be secured to item 176 (shift arm) by means of a "push nut" (item 174). The shift arm (176) seems to be attached to the shift shaft (item 175) by a "flange head bolt" (item 8). My guess is that the flange head bolt is also a "shoulder bolt" which allows it to be tight but still permit the shift arm to pivot properly on the shift shaft. There is also a spring (item 178) on the shift lever to keep the lever tight against the shift arm. So, it looks like there are 2 possibilities on this set-up where you could lose control of the transmission. (#1) The plus nut falls off the end of the shift lever (22) and the lever disconnects from the shift arm. (#2) The flange head bolt loosens and falls out of the shift arm (176) and disconnects the arm from the shift shaft (175). I don't know if any of this will be useful to you but I thought I'd pass along what I see in the IPL. Oh, by the way........your caps lock key is turned on. Here is a link that might be useful:

Well sir, this does not sound good at all. The fact that the transmission can not be placed in neutral, with or with out the engine running could mean you have serious damage inside the transmission. The burning smell is obviously from the drive belt and it may be burning itself out trying to turn the transmission pulley that will not turn. You might get lucky and find that one of the other small ider pulleys has locked up, and burning the belt, but that would not cover the issue of the tranny not shifting to neutral. There are no adjustments that would correct for the transmission not moving the tractor forward or backward when the clutch was engaged. The neutral adjustment only assures that the neutral spot inside the transmission coincides with the neutral slot in the fender. I'm afraid you are looking at a transmission that is locked up.......either by having shifted itself into 2 gears at the same time.........or it has seized a shaft due to bearing failure........or it could be something else. But I'm betting it's inside damage to the transmission.

For everyone having the problem with your garage door not closing... I've read this entire blog and tried everything suggested. The force/travel adjustments would solve my problem for a while then it would come back so, if you've already checked sensors, wiring for damage/connection, adjusted the up/down force, adjusted the up/down travel here's something to try before buying a new opener: Inside the unit find the up/down travel adjustment mechanism(see photo). At the end opposite the screw-heads you turn to adjust the travel there is a gear mechanism. When these gears wear they can slip. In addition, the chassis for the gears is plastic and over time will weaken-my opener is almost 12 years old! My gears are still in pretty good shape. The problem is that the chassis would flex and allow the gears to jump hence, the reason my adjustments would work for a while then the problem would come back. Now I know this will sound like a hokey fix but I figure it is better than dropping a couple hundred bucks on a new opener...I pushed a toothpick into the hole in the main chassis where the travel mechanism is snapped in essentially eliminating the chassis from flexing and allowing the gears to slip. make sure you do this on the side opposite the gears. If you do it on the same side you will put a larger space between the gears making the problem worse. This has been working for nearly a month now. I attached a picture of the travel adjust mechanism for reference. It is difficult to see the toothpick in the photo. It is right next to the brown wire connection opposite end of the mechanism from the adjustment screw heads. One other hint: the opener will most likely get hot running the door up and down making your adjustments and will shut off (thermal overload protection). I don't know why but after this happened the green light next to the remote programming button on the back would flash 5 times-off-flash 5 times...repeatedly. I had to pull the power for a couple minutes to get the light to stop blinking. Either let the unit cool for about 10 minutes after it shuts off or to keep your unit from overheating, place a small floor fan in position to blow on the motor. What I did find is that the brake pedal seems not to be coming back to normal position after depressed. In other words, if I pull back on the brake pedal with the heal of my foot and press the accelerator pedal the tractor moves forward and reverse. As soon as I let go of the brake pedal the belt loses just enough tension so that the unit won't go forward. Is there some mechanism that is supposed to be on the brake pedal to keep the tension on the belt. It almost seems like a tension spring fell off or something but I can't tell if there is supposed to be one.

From what you decribe ,sounds like it could be the Drive Belt,or your Transmission could require purging (See Manual Purge the Transmission)

As soon as I let go of the brake pedal the belt loses just enough tension so that the unit won't go forward.

sounds like you lost a spring.

I followed the brake rod to the back of the tractor. There is a spring there that is on the brake rod itself. The spring seems to be floating freely on the rod. It is surround by washers and nuts. According to the manual all of the parts are there I just don't know if the spring is supposed to float freely or actually be attached to something. If anyone that has a DLT 2000 could look at theirs and tell me how it is attached I would greatly appreciate it.

There is a compression spring on the rod and some a tension spring that hooks on the front caliper bolt if I recall. The 917 # from under the seat would be helpful. Make your life easier and pull the r/h rear tire so you have access. Sometimes a coating of rust on the back of the lever can bind. A light lube can help it along- not on the disc! It may take an adjustment via the castle nut. Tho it sounds like the brake releases with help I'm guessing the caliper is ok. Sometimes the 2 actuating pins seize in the caliper and then the caliper needs to come off and be freed up + the disc on the shaft as well. Once you get the lever moving freely tho, it should be fine.

Turns out it was the clutch tension spring. The spring had shot up into the front housing of the motor and was barely poking out. Actually I am amazed I found it. I ordered a new spring it was around $7 but it cost $8.50 to ship what a load of crap. Anyway when I get the spring I am hoping I can figure out where it was supposed to attach. I think I have a reasonable idea. Thanks for all your help. This forum has assisted me on numerous occasions.

Are you still following this? i have the same issue. the spring is floating at the seeming end od the brake rod.
