Home Depot 10% off with new Credit Card - really??

Hi folks

I seem to be getting different information from HD staff. They ran a 4 days promo last weekend for 10% off first purchase if I applied for a HD Credit Card.

Then a seasonal person told me I could NOT use that 10% on the pruchase of a Cub Cadet RZT50 to get an additional $300 off (limit of discount) becuase the unit had already been "marked way down".

I have seen post from HD USA customers where the sales person encouraged them to apply for the card ($200 limit in those cases).

Anyone experienced this kind of inconsistency at HD Canada?

When a seasonal employee tells you anything simply ask "can I talk to a manager." A seasonal employee does not have the decision rights or knowledge to help you. (this technique works at all retail stores)

That may or may not work in Canada. You've heard of "The customer is always right"? In France of course "The customer is always wrong". In Canada it's somewhere in between. ;^)

One of the biggest problems with any scheme to pay off credit cards by using more credit is most people do NOT change their spending habits. The average consumer will take out a home equity loan to pay off outstanding balances and then only 2 or 3 years later find themselves with a home equity loan and credit cards at their max again. That doesn't solve the problem; it makes it worse. Plus there is the potential to lose you home if you fail to make payments on the home equity loan. In my humble opinion, this is not the best solution to your problem unless you and your significant other make some changes in your spending habits. Switching from one low/no interest credit card can be very damaging to your credit score. One of the components of a credit score is how long your current accounts have been open. Longer is better. New credit cards every 6 months will lower your score which means you pay higher rates or cannot qualify for those "teaser" rates. Also, be aware that the teaser rates will escalate very rapidly if you are ever late with a payment. The solution that I suggest to the personal financial management classses I teach is to stop using credit cards for any daily expenses. Save them for emergencies (a death in the family, an earthquake destroys your house, a hurricane is coming and you have to evacuate). Concentrate on paying off one card by paying extra on that card every month but continue to make the minimum payments on every card you have. When that card is paid off, apply that payment to the next card until it is paid off. If you have trouble avoiding temptation with credit cards, put them in a ziplock bag and seal it. Put that bag in another bag and fill it with water. Put both bags in the freezer and leave it there. Anytime you need a card it is available, but you have to wait to thaw it out to use it which means you have time to think about whether or not you really, really NEED what you plan to purchase with credit. While it sounds "dorky" and simplistic, it does work. Good luck

I don't think that there's been much change in the parameters relating to my cards (one recently signed up for) in recent months. It's the old corporate game - while they love competition among their suppliers ... and among their customers ... they hate it on their own level and work to get rid of their competition at whatever cost: buy the competitors, squeeze them out, start frightening rumours about them or whatever. There aren't a lot of card companies ... so they can pretty well set their own rules ... and we can take it or leave it. They offer unsecured loans ... and have been suffering losses, as people die owing, go bankrupt, etc. And, the economy being what it is, with so many becoming unemployed, they likely anticipate more such losses in the near future. Plus many of the banks have been left holding the bag on many of those stinky loans, mortgages, etc. - I own Canadian bank shares, which got stuck with a number of them, and the value of my shares are now less than 40% of what they were in early summer 2007. When you have four pockets ... ... and you know that there's no money in three of them ... ... into which pocket do you stick your hand when you need some? ... how often do you stick your hand into any one of the three pockets where you know that there's no money even when your hand gets all of the way to the bottom?? Memo ... to individuals, as to businesses (but most of the latter know it now) ... ... when you need money ... ... go where the money is! Like the credit card companies do. They may cancel the cards of folks who've been giving them a rough time, i.e., not paying. But they don't mind your payment being late - look at the large fee that they charge ... for what ... waiting an extra day or two for the payment? Suppose it's $100.00 payment ... at 10% annual rate, that's $10.00 per year, or about 3 cents per day. If your payment arrives 3 days late ... their cost is about a dime ... and they charge you a $20.00 late fee? Think they're about to cancel your card? Why would they?? They're making a very nice bucket of money off of you ... and others like you. You go over your credit limit? More of the same. So why would they shut you down?? You're a profit centre for them!! If so for them ... how about you?? If you blow an engine in your car tomorrow ... how will you pay for the repair? Or ... if you get laid off ... what will you live on? Have you ever had a pair of handcuffs snap around your wrists? I haven't either ... and I don't want any: I have absolutely no hankering for such an experience! I love my financial freedom!! If you don't have a financial cushion of some funds available in case of immediate drastic need, I claim that you have a pair of handcuffs lying on your dresser, right beside where you lay your wallet at night. Just waiting for an emergency need of money ... or a layoff ... to have them jump up and snap around your wrists. Financial freedom - that ain't!! Hope you all have a lovely weekend ... and if you'd be sweating blood if you don't get a paycheque ... or two ... ... please - do yourself a favour. Even though it may be a beautiful weekend, find a way to enjoy it while spending little or nothing. Start that savings fund ... build yourself a financial cushion. Aim at a minimum of 3 months' income available in case of emergency. Six months' earnings, or 9 months' ... or up to a year's worth, is even better. After 25 years or so as a personal financial advisor, I don't have it, myself, some of the time. Some of the time I have money in the bank, money market fund, etc., immediately available ... but sometimes not. I have a credit card that I don't use much, that I can use to fix my car, fly me home in case the travel co. goes broke and the hotel says pay - again - or go to jail, etc. And I have a Line of Credit at the bank, initiated several years ago at no fee, fully secured by stock or mutual fund certificates, in order to arrange a low interest rate ... and it lies there unused, most of the time (but there's no inactivity fee to pay). If I use the card for emergency ... I pay off the full balance prior to the due date, using my Line of Credit if the amount in my bank account, money market, etc. are short. Then ... pay off that loan (low interest - far lower than the rate charged on unpaid balances owing on the credit card) as soon as possible. I want my money working for me ... not be forced to use other folks' money ... and pay rent on it while I'm using it ... especially if it's the kind where they charge very high rates! I never want to have to darken the door of a payday loan company: their rates are ... *horrendous*! 9 active cards may be a temptation, but the fact is that the credit companies look at how much of your available credit you've used up. So, say you have 10 cards that have a limit of $1000 each--total $10,000. You owe $800/card--total $8000. You pay off one card, so your total owed is now $7200. That's 72% of your credit limit. Now, if you cancel the card you just paid off, your total credit limit is $9000, and the $7200 is 80% of that. The percentage of unused credit has gone down. This makes you look like a worse credit risk than if you had left that card account open--even though you're improving your handling of money by paying off cards. Don't cancel any cards unless you're really a serious shopping addict and will spend the day buying on QVC using account numbers off your old statements out of the file cabinet. Instead, freeze them in a block of ice, put them under the mattress, even cut them up--just keep the accounts open. At least until you've gotten several cards paid off. I actually like Karla's system a lot. As an aside, i'm always surprised at how many cards my credit report shows i have. There are a couple of store cards that I haven't seen in years, but they're still on there. To say nothing of the fact that AMEX for some reason has me down as having had something like 5 cards, when I've only ever had 1 at a time. Go figure. They must have counted each time the acct number changed or something. So 9 cards isn't really too bizarre. To make it even more confusing, I've gotten 'adverse action' notices a couple of times (that's where they send a form letter saying that something in my credit made me get less than the absolute best deal). In the 'reasons' section, it said both that I had too many credit accounts and too few. Huh? WTF? Be sure before you start house-shopping to pull at least one copy of your credit report (DH's too), and pay the extra money for your credit score. Make sure you've gotten any errors handled.

Let us know how it turns out. I would be very surprised if you didn't get your 10% plus whatever discount was already on the tractor. There are quite a few stories on here about people who get deals like that. I went into Sears a day after one of their "big sales" to buy an air compressor and the manager gave me the sales price anyway.

Got a call today and was told that, while NO DOUBLE DIPPING on specials is usually the case, because it is the end of the season and they want to get rid of these mowers and MTD is balking at taking back over 1000 of them from HD, they will honour the 10% and give me the additional $300 credit.

I'll find out tomorrow if this all works out and I end up with a Cub Cadet RZT50 for $2899 Cdn. If it comes together I think I got a good deal (not quite as good as the fellow who paid $1399 but ..)

More good news tomorrow I hope.

My local HD always has signs saying save an additional 10% if you get a new card that day. Even on the deeply discounted items they still indicated on the signs that you can save an extra 10% by using your new card.

FYI, if you do get the card they occasionally will send you a 10% coupon in the mail. The only problem with the coupon is that its usually only good for a week.

If item is bought with a credit card,what is the interest rate,and does it swallow up the original "savings",and then some? Seems more profit is made on finance charges,than selling the item.Retailers can well have "sales" to encourage people to spend money they don't have.Nearly 90 percent of the country is drowning in credit card debt.I use credit cards for conviemce,and pay in full,when the monthly statment arrives.I get the "sale savings"without paying any interest.

They are problably offering 0% for 12 mos. along with this deal. There is nothing wrong w/financing as long as you pay it off within the no interest period.

Well folks, I went in to do the deal this morning and - the unit they had in stock had been sold the previous evening. BUT - all is not lost. The manager who returned my call said he will try to see if he can get a unit from a store in the area (same deal applies) and he will let me know in a day or two. The saga continues - it is driving my wife crazy but, I am confident it will work out in the end.

I've had HD give me the sales price even though it was off sale. The item was still marked on sale but the sale was over.
Some associates have the authority to give you a ticket mark down. One time I went to lowes for a rediculously low miter saw. They were sold out so I went to HD. They had it and gave me the 110% deal. We also spent 3800 dollars on a first time HD card purchase. They ended up giving us 400 dollars off(paid for tax).
I have had good experience with HD. I wouldn't want to see how much I have spent there in the past 7 years.

Well, it seems my experience with Home Depot is soon to move way up on the satifactions scale.
I spoke with Ass't Mgr today and he says he has located a unit (Cub Cadet RZT50) at a store west of here. It should be available for me in 3-4 days as it is not priority shipping for them and must be transferred from store to warehouse to his store (I did tell him earlier that I was not in a big hurry).

He wants me to come in and inspect it when it arrives and, only when I am satisfied, then we will do the necessary paperwork to get the additional 10% (up to $300) off.

Patience and asking questions pays off - I hope. I should be able to confirm that by the end of this week.
