bad defoliation due to rose slug - how to help stressed rose

Several of my potted roses have suffered badly from those soft little gray/green creatures that I have been told are rose slugs. They don't look like slugs, they look like a little caterpillar or grub, about the thickness of heavyduty buttonhole thread. They squish on contact.

I don't like to use pesticides, but the handpicking fell behind last weekend when I had to be away for most of the time.

The roses are due for their fertilizer - I mix that pink Miracle Gro for roses into their water. Should I stick to the schedule? Also,is my assumption that all the skeletonized leaves are not very efficient food factories correct? If so, I want to strip them off, as they look nasty.

All the affected roses are blooming up a storm, by the way.

Thanks in advance for advice!
