No blooms on Magnolia Tree...

I'm sorry if this is not the appropriate place to post this question, but I did do a search and came up with nothing. I need some advice about my Magnolia Tree. I purchased it about 3 years ago and it's about as tall as me, which is 5'5". It looks healthy, but I don't have any blooms on it. The name of the tree when I purchased it was "Big Pink". So far it's getting bigger, but no pink? Does it need to be a certain age before it blooms? I was so disappointed when I didn't see any after waiting all year. Now it looks as though the leaves are beginning to open. Any advice is appreciated.

It's the right place, so you should get plenty of advice. Two things: 1) many trees need to be a certain age or size before they flower, which may be the situation with your magnolia; 2) since you don't say where in the USA you are located, it's hard to know if the cold weather this winter/spring affected the flower buds on your magnolia or not. Please add your location to your member page, as well as letting us know now where you are.

I have had several trees, including various magnolias, wait for up to 4 years after I planted them before they finally flowered for me. It's just one of the things trees do, and one reason why, sometimes, bigger trees are better. Some trees will flower at an early age, and some wait for 7-10 years.

I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you the location. I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin. From what you've told me maybe I just need to keep waiting until the tree matures a little more. The two Royal Star Magnolia's I planted last year were in bloom this year and I guess I expected it from the other one too.

Magnolias might be the greatest tree genus on earth if they had nice fall color. Still a must have anyway you cut it. Finally adding a few more this year. Those look exceptionally florous.

Tree shown has the silky hairs of M. biloba (M. officinalis biloba), did you wait for the document to open? It takes some seconds for the text to appear but when it does the link opens it right on the pertinent part of what is otherwise a multiple page journal that would have to be gone through. could be a young magnolia but It does look like a fig if you select 3-4 of the strongest branches and prune them at about 1ft from the soil, it will grow in a nice open habit...or select one and prune it at about 2ft, stake it and it will be more of a half standard style the whip should be pruned at about 1' as well, this will induce branching below the cut

The Star magnolias, as a group, are famous for flowering at a very young age - the rest of the family waits a bit longer, although some come close.
