David Austin Roses for Zone 5a
Comments (8)I grow several Austins here in Montreal (hot and also HUMID summers)and they do very well. I spray with sulphur in the spring, after pruning, and Safer's Defender in late summer, if needed. The only time I get a little blackspot is if we have a very cool, wet spring, and sometimes in the fall, if it's damp (I have no BS so far this season). I do get powdery mildew on a few that aren't on your list. Every area is different, you won't know for sure until you try. As others have said, they have varying degrees of winterkill depending on the winter, but they all bounce back and are blooming by early June no matter how low I've had to prune. I've never lost one in the ground (mine are planted around 2 inches deep, so I do mound them with about 10" of soil in November, just in case. Planting deeper will eliminate that chore). You will love their beautiful and fragrant blooms. These have all come through winter beautifully (grafted on multiflora, unless otherwise indicated): Graham Thomas (own root) Charlotte (own root) The Prince Sharifa Asma Evelyn Tamora Heritage Janet Pretty Jessica Jubilee Celebration Abe Darby Jude the Obscure Spirit of Freedom (own root) Crocus Rose (as everyone has said, the least winterkill) Judith...See MoreHas anyone grown Buttercup Rose, David Austin Rose
Comments (13)I spoke to DA just this morning. The nice Customer Service Lady said that its a good rose for my climate (very similar to the Pacific Northwest). She said that its a heathy rose but not so hardy if I lived closer to the sea. (There's a couple very, very small mountains between the sea and my garden so I'm ok) I also asked why its a lesser known variety. She answered a distinctive London accent, "it's just an older variety, we're not hiding it or anything. It's a lovely rose, beautiful cups with fewer petals so the rain doesn't affect them as much. It would do well for you in Donegal as long as your a bit inland from the coast." I hope that helps. I'm not sure what your zone is. Comments (24)Thank you to all the kind respondents to this thread! After quite the ordeal, and several changes of heart and mind, I have finalized my rose list and placed my orders. I ended up ordering more than I originally planned, since I had to remove ALL my roses in front of my house due to rose rosette disease. I will be starting fresh, replacing the soil completely. The finalists, for those who care or may be interested, are ... From Rogue Valley Roses:- Zephirine Drouhin (replacing my beloved) Kathleen Harrop (how could I resist Zephy's sport?) Duchesse de Rohan (Tolkien fan here) Snowbird Yesterday (my free rose) From Heirloom Roses: Braveheart (thanks for the suggestion, Kate!) From Burlington Roses: Marshmallow Fluff From Roses of Yesterday and Today: Felicite Parmentier From High Country Roses: Boule De Neige Alfred Colomb From David Austin: Darcey Bussell Princess Alexandra of Kent Olivia Rose Austin Queen of Sweden Redoute The Alnwick Rose The DA roses are grafted bare roots, all others are own-root. So excited!!...See MoreDavid Austin Rose Charlotte
Comments (13)Thank you hoovb very much for your nice comment. Julia repeating faster than any Austin sounds like the best thing ever. I really like how the petals of the Austins fall cleanly and I don't expect them to make great cut roses around here so I just enjoy them the way they are =) <-- Big Austin fan here. Thank you Anthony, I appreciate it. I do love my Charlotte very much, but I don't recall it being particularly fragrant. I feel like all my Austins have some fragrance including this one, but Charlotte doesn't shine in that respect. If I spray faithfully she stays clean, but now that I haven't sprayed in a couple of months she has some blackspot, she is not covered with it. For example Olivia and Roald D are 100% clean, Boscobell is looking rough at 50% black spot, Carding Mill is 90% and about to defoliate while Charlotte may be at 15%. If you have space for both roses I would get both, otherwise if Julia is resistant to BS I would certainly give her a try after all the wonderful things I have heard about her. Hoovb's comment about Julia repeating faster than Molineux would certainly make me want to give it a try. Good luck with whichever rose you end up getting....See Moreken-n.ga.mts
