Trying to decide on shade trees
Comments (3)A great place to grow a good number of trees! I believe willow oak likes medium to damp territory. Scarlet oak I mentioned probably likes medium to slightly dry. Metasequoia which I love likes medium to darned near a swamp and grows FAST. For a traditional shade tree shape you have to limb it up. It will stay pyramidal though. Lirondendron tulipfera (spelling?) Aka tulip tree just got declared the tallest eastern hardwood if I am not mistaken. Leave some low hanging limbs on for flower enjoyment. Some have darned good yellow fall color. junglans nigra, black walnut, is an oddball choice that just came to mind. Maybe go with a carpathian variety with thinner shelled nuts if you can tolerate a non native. it is not AS toxic to other plants as the internets might lead you to believe but no walnuts near your veggie garden....See MoreTrying to decide what to do with this small oak tree...help!
Comments (18)I'm in zone 5A, should I plant now or wait until the Spring? Logan, what does "mechanical" damage mean? It wasn't damaged by anything "mechanical", it was some animal that chewed on it. I do all my own yard work so there was never anything like a weed eater or anything mechanical that hit the tree. Maybe I'm misunderstanding. Thanks all. I just wanted to be sure. A friend was telling me "oh it will come back, it's just repairing itself". I'm like "yeah but it's been 5 or 6 years". I'm just annoyed that I waited so long! I just kept thinking it would make a comeback, but the scarred trunk actually just seems like it's getting worse and worse each year....See MoreShould I try to transplant these magnolias or leave them alone?
Comments (8)as long as your utilities are waterproof ... intact ... the trees are not going to impact them ... they are not a reason to move them ... cable peeps can run a cable anywhere ... i would let them deal with it all ...trust me.. they want your monthly money.. they will get cable to the house .... i see a wood deck.. not a slab patio ... so im a bit confused ... are you talking about the house being on a slab??? .. is the house slab intact.. in good shape.. i really dont see these as monster trees that are going to move your house ... in your lifetime anyway .... imo.. these are beyond the common homeowner moving them ... so in my world.. all you are left with is removal .. and if that were your choice .. i would just cut them flush to the ground and treat with a stump killer.. and let the roots rot in place ... if you are going to hang around the forums.. it always helps to tell us where you are ... big city name .. ken...See MoreCannot decide which prefinished hardwood to choose
Comments (10)We sell and install prefinished hardwood. The fact that we install holds us accountable to only sell products we know will perform well. Once you select a good product, it will come down to proper installation, customer education and maintenance. ANY wood you choose, even the hardest on the scale will dent, scratch and ding. So get that out of the way and know it wil happen. Mid tones and low sheen finishes along with textured finishes like wire brush or hand scrape will help drastically with hiding "life". You're on the right track with your notes above. In our experience, MIRAGE- top pick, the Kentwood Originals Collection, Hallmark Monterey Collection, some of the better quality Anderson Tuftex hardwoods, Homerwood, and the thicker wear layer United tile "Plank" brands do well! Remember, keeping your home at a consistent humidity, not using a wet mop on it, and keeping consistent temperature is key. If you have direct sunlight from windows, you will need window coverings to protect your flooring. Hardwood is an investment and you'll want to care for it correctly to get your full life out of it. We RARELY see cracking, peeling of the finishes, etc with any of the brands listed. Another normal thing with hardwood is that it expands and contracts through season changes. You WILL have gaps at different spots at different times. Sometimes this could be a quarter thickness, it's normal! These are all expectations we educate our customer on. Don't get too wrapped up in the online reviews of hardwood. The hardwood reviews I see online are all related to improper care (wet mops, steamers, etc. in particular), incorrect install, or expecting them to perform without scratching, denting, etc. The customer was simply not educated on what it should do and how to care for it. Sorry for the long post but there's our take on it! We have been doing hardwood flooring for over 50 years. Be sure to purchase through a reputable, experienced dealer and installer when making an investment like this. Good luck, it will turn out beautiful! Also, if you have a specific product you're leaning towards, i'd be happy to respond on it as well....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
