I've been very happy with Clair Matin----she is only 3 years old but she is very hardy and last year she had good repeat bloom------

Sandy, do you have Noella Nabannond? Such a beautiful rose. Color is red, she's fragrant, mostly thornless, a vigorous grower own root and very disease resistant. The rebloom the first year was poor (as with most climbers), the second year was much better, this year she has been blooming continuously since April. She even bloomed through the freeze we had!

Sandy, are you in a sandy-soil area? If so most roses not on fortuniana rootstock will fail because of nematodes. Most China roses do OK on their own roots. Otherwise you need to start with a list of roses available on fortuniana.

I'm always touting Clair Matin here for fast, full repeat bloom, disease resistance, and winter hardiness, but I don't know how she does in the heat.

Michaelg, yes, I am aware of certain areas of Florida having nematode issues, but thanks for your input! You're very kind and I appreciate your concern. I am in Central Florida, and do not believe I have issues with nematodes, as I have been growing roses successfully for some time now, some of which are on their own roots. Many others are recent, so I can't judge them yet. I wouldn't even consider Mrs. BR Cant or Madame Lombard grafted. I think Mrs. BR Cant could be used as rootstock!!!! I have good soil, despite the sand, as where all of our houses are built once was farmland. On the other hand, all of my hybrid teas are budded on fortuniana. I think it depends on what rose is being grown.

It can be extremely difficult to find any old garden roses grafted on fortuniana. Consequently, I have decided I will try some that I am intrigued with, evn if they are on their own roots, and those that don't cut it don't belong here anyway! If I like certain ones and they decline, and I determine it is from a nematode issue, I can always get them grafted. Sometimes roses will decline for whatever reason, and it will have nothing to do with nematodes, just the fact that they are unadapted for this area. Grafted plants have issues also, so I personally don't feel there are any guarantees. When in doubt, I do try to get them budded.

Clair Matin sounds really, really nice. Carol your Noella Nabonnand is gorgeous. She is actually one I was wondering about. It looks as though you may be growing her freestanding?

No, she is on an obelisk and by her second year she had grown up, over and out of it and cascaded over the rose in front of her :-). The light pink rose in front of her is over 6 ft tall. I was standing on a bench when I took that photo. One of the things that I like about her is that I can prune her to keep her off the other roses and keep her in bounds or tie/tuck her canes into the obelisk because they are flexible. She doesn't seem to be bothered by much of anything.

I have Camellia Rose, and she blooms a lot..and stays clean for me...the flowers are a dark pink and very fragrant. Some call her a Noisette while others say, she is a China....I call her a Noisette/China...works for me!
I also agree with Carol re Noella Nabonnand..I have her too and I love that rose! This year, she has been exceptional!

I have Cl Lady Hillingdon. I also have the bush form. Both are the same age. The bush started blooming off the bat while CL took an extra year. She is now starting to grow decent canes and is starting to bloom..I expect bext year she will be gorgeous.

I also have Noella but mine is younger and still in a pot. That's ok, she is blooming abit this year.

I have Cl. Devoniensis who is trying to eat the whole garden..and house..and farm for that matter!! And I put it next to Maggie..good lord what was I thinking???

Not to worry, I did the same thing. Maggie can be moved during your coldest weather without any setback.

Michaelg I would never snap at you! You are trying to be helpful, and that is what we're all here for. You would have no way of knowing if I was just starting out with roses or not, so please don't ever be afraid to offer your advice to anyone who asks. I'm trying to experiment a bit and see if some of the own root roses will thrive. I actually prefer the growth habit of an own root rose compared to grafted. However, when it comes to some of the climbing teas and noisettes, if I were able to get them on fortuniana, I would, because of the time involved getting climbers established on a structure. I hope what I put on there doesn't fizzle out. After much discussion with Malcolm Manners about nematodes, it sounds like the safest bet with own root is to plant them near a concrete slab, which is what our house is built on. For the most part, I've been trying to do that. I'm also trying to keep the soil organisms going, because some of the beneficial ones eat the bad ones.

The biggest advantage with own root is that they are much better anchored in the ground in the event of high winds from a hurricaine. A few years ago I lost a LOT of hybrid teas on fortuniana even though we weren't the hardest hit in the state. You know what though, it's O.K. because I started to branch out even more into OGR. I now only have a dozen or so hybrid teas. The rest are some David Austins and OGR.

Mari, is your Devoniensis own root, and does it bloom a lot? Where did you get her from?

I have a young Maggie, planted last spring that I am growing as a shrub. She's one of my absolute favorites. Are you growing her as a climber?

Sandy, have you thought of Parade? I'm thinking of putting an own root in that space next to the garage door - 3' x 5' of ground amended with lots of soil conditioner (chopped pine bark) surrounded totally by concrete! I dare those nematodes to venture into that bed! These pictures caused me heart palpatations. Then I read a post by someone in S Florida (I think Mari) who said she grew it successfully, so I really want to find one. BTW, Central FL Rose Society website lists Clair Matin as a suggested rose for Central Florida.
