Lx266 gas tank removed

Ok, if anybody wants to see what under your seat, fenders, and gas tank on a JD LX model hears your chance. took about two hours to get it clean including the gas tank.

that's what about 8 years of crud looks like.

that what it looks like clean. You should of seen what I got out of the tank! about 1 pint of rusty, gummy, sticky looking crud. Got to get a fuel out tube or seal before assemble other than that I'll be done with it.

the Lawn equipment shed, see My old "LT4000" in the back ground! that tractor mowed more grass than most cows ate. hee, hee.

Original, Just when you think you got something clean! I couldn't beleive the caked on crud under the fender panel.

I should of too a picture of what I got out of the inside of the gas tank. Would be a good driving point to clean out gas tanks ever few years. When I seen the fine rusty looking particles on the other side of the filter on there way to my new carb. I knew I had to get that tank off and clean it.

Basically removing the recoil bolts and disconnecting the fuel line. If it is dirty underneath near the carb, blow off the extra dirt to keep it out of the engine as you pop it off.

O'Reillys has that at 28 dollars a gallon I use on old gas caps and pour back in jug all but settlement in bottom. I learn longtime ago that old metal gas tanks on twocycle engine never had rust so I add 4 or 5 drops mixing oil to metal gas tank on 4 cycle engine to prevent moisture from getting to metal it don't effect engine that small amount but coats metal over winter when tank pull in more moisturer. keeping full gas tank action gas blow the moisture away out vent.

Before going further, I would drop the bowl and confirm this is a water issue - unless you can see it in the tank. As you are having startability issues, you will likely need to get the water out of the carb and lines. If you remove the fuel through the line before the pump and add a 3/4 bottle of drier (heat) as the tank is draining near the end of the fuel it should carry most the water out with it. Be sure to let fresh fuel flow through the pump and lines before buttoning the system back up w/ the new filter. You should add a couple ounces of drier also with the fresh fuel to help some additional water to run through- ideally adding about as much fuel as you think you will be using this time out. I'm not a big fan of using lots of alcohol in our small engines and letting it sit. If you have actual ice in the tank, tell your wife you need to pull the tractor in the dining room to warm up. Kidding on that obviously, but you can see that actual ice will change your repair somewhat. Give that old gas can you that neighbor with the barking dog and get yourself a new one.

I just pressure washed it. took 45 min. to get the tank out. about hour to clean it out. Figure about hour to reassemble. I know your joking, I don't think JD factory workers would paint parts on the concrete floor as you can see the black over-spray. Speaking of; what's good to use to get over spray off with out blemishing my pretty green paint???? I'm an avid user of carb. cleaner the mulit-purpose cleaner, but it also takes a thin layer of orginal paint off too, which I want to aviod.

I have heard that WD-40 and a soft cloth plus some "elbow grease" will take off the offensive overspray but leave the good stuff. Follow that with some polishing compound and then wax the paint after it is as clean as you want it.
