Cherry Tree Roots in Lawn

I have 2 ~40' Cherry trees in my yard that have exposed roots ~20' from the base of the tree that are 2-3" in diameter. It seems most of the "what to do about exposed roots" questions on here have to do with roots closer to the base of the tree. My kids like to play in the yard and these are kind of a tripping hazard. I would also like to encourage my lawn to grow more in that area. On trees this large what kind of impact should I expect if I were to cut 2-3 of these roots?

PS: I was told a few years ago when we had them pruned that they were "Native Cherries". I am not sure any more specifically about what species they are. I am also located in the Pacific Northwest, just out side of Portland, OR.
