long term babysitter of AV needs a little help!

HI everyone--

I'm so glad I found this forum! A friend of mine left for the Peace Corps recently and entrusted the care of her african violets to me while she's gone. When she gave them to me they were beautiful and deep green and fuzzy and flowering. Now the problem......she said they needed to be repotted, which I did. I read the FAQ here and realized I should have used something lighter than AV potting soil, and that my pot is too big, and I haven't fretilized it in about 3 months, so those things I'll fix. The new leaves coming in are horizontal, so I think the light is ok, but all the leaves now curl under (even the new tiny ones), and the older leaves are limp and brownish green. Not pretty. Do you think the leaf issues are due to all the soil issues? These plants really, really, really can't die!! It would be great if they were healthy and flowering when she got back (in two years!!). Thanks for any advice or suggestions you might have.....

Beth, nervous plant caretaker
