Any suggestions for my roses?

Hi everyone! My mother planted this climbing rose on our property at least 25-30 years ago. It has always bloomed reliably in the spring but it suffers from blackspot and defoliation in the summer. This year I have vowed to try and consistently take care of this rose. I have started a fungicide spraying regimen, and will soon fertilize it. Next spring, I plan on pruning some of the dead wood out. Please give me any suggestion to take good care of this rose!

How cool--your mom's rose!

I'd prune out all the deadwood right now.

I'd also give it regular feedings of one of the --Tones (RoseTone or HollyTone or PlantTone)--every month or 6 weeks (at end of each blooming cycle). Water it in well and don't forget to water the plant regularly to maintain moist soil (but not water-logged, please). Follow the directions for regular application of the fungicide--every two weeks maybe?--though you may be able to let up in July and August if it gets really hot then in your region.

There, that should about do it. Let us know how it fares.

It looks a lot like a climbing miniature rose. You can prune the canes WAY back this time of year and the bush will react by growing vigorously. In your zone it is not a good idea to HARD prune after July 15th but as it is five weeks till then you have plenty of time.

I have been in a lrearning experience for 3 years and this is what I have found out: They hate COLD temps and HATE to be watered at all at this time. Unless they are in a full sunny very warm to hot window or under lights and actively growing with leaves, you should not water at all. Some I know do not water them at all all winter while they go into dormant stage. Only when leaves start to emerge, they start watering in warm sun. Let's make this as easy as possible. floridarose, I got my seed from a friend, but I always assumed they were something like Summer Carnival, but after being open pollinated for years, things can change. There is some variation in height, but most are a little shorter like SC, and do often bloom the first year. It's hard to tell if they act as short lived periennials or are just reseeding almost on top of the mother plant. I don't stake my hollyhocks, but grow them against fences and the house. I've tried the Madame Butterfly snaps, and didn't like them as well as la Bella. Not only do la Bellas live longer than most other snaps, when they are pinched back they promptly send another single thick shoot up. When I pinch back Rockets, they start branching off with floppy shoots, though they also live through winter here quite well. La Bella doesn't reseed like the other snaps I grow, though (darn). It's probably a hybrid that wouldn't breed true, anyway. Here is a pic of Rocket snaps. Off to the side are some pink la Bellas. Hopefully, my file isn't too large for posting here.

Any suggestions on how to make my rose garden prettier?

Hi Erica, It is difficult to suggest since I live in a different zone (Portland, Oregon). However, I will write what I would do to make it prettier. In the place of "6 roses in front of the hedge" I would plant 6-7 roses "Double Knokout". That rose gives flower through the entire season with color giving an excellent contrast to the grass and the green hedge and a strong accent to your pretty pale house. Also I would plant 3 roses of the "Knokout" instead of the pink shrub rose. Knockout is slightly different from Double Knockout -- that will give a nice effect as well. You did very good by removing the ugly evergreen. The three trellises look very good as well. I would plant some of red climbing roses on them (in my region, blaze does very well, but Dortmunt and Dublin are very good as well). I would go with RED roses to give more color to the light bricks. In front of the trellises, you may have two and a half rows for different flowers (roses, Dahlias, Zinnias, etc). Higher and darker in the back row and smaller and lighter in the front row. I would also plant few bunches of Narcissus (Daffodils) between since they are the first flower ti give a strong impact in spring, and they are low maintainance plants, and they die back in May. Then few azaleas (for example Hino Crimson), since they flower just after Narcissus. In the rows I would plant different roses (or other flowers). From roses I would choose few of a rather small floribunda roses, for example Disneyland, since it gives spectacular and rather unusual colors. I'm very in red and yellow colors, then I would also add a line of marigolds on the edge along the path. I would also plant some ground cover levander to cover 50 % of the brown area (it is evergreen in my climate, and it is covered with flowers for a month). But before doing anything I would remove the existing roses, double dig the entire area, amend some organic matter to the soil. Then I would plant back the removed roses, add new plants, and mulch the area with a new dark, fine mulch.

Can you post a picture of a single bloom? From your description it sound like it could be Dr. Huey but can't be sure with out seeing a photo of the bloom.

Has it ever produced any repeat bloom after the May-June flush? If not, it probably never will.

A good pruning tip for elderly rose plants is to remove a fraction of the canes (the oldest ones) at the base after the May-June flush is over. This causes the rose to regenerate itself by putting up a similar number of new canes from the base.

Sorry for the delayed response. To be honest I don't know if its ever had a second bloom but I will keep an eye on it this year. To hear that it might jut be rootstock growth is slightly disappointing, but I talked with my mom and she said she did try to dig it up one year, but that she remembers it always blooming like this. So perhaps the grafted part of the rose NEVER made it and that it's always been rootstock. If I can't get the blackspot under control and it completely defoliates again, we might consider taking it out and replacing it with a named, tougher variety. Here's some more pictures I took, the quality isn't the greatest (cell phone) but what do you think? Is it Dr. Huey?

Dr. Huey is much darker and smaller. I just dug up a Dr. Huey that I've had for a few years after the graft died off. Yours does not look like a Dr. Huey to me based on the color and size of the blooms. Dr. Huey is a darker red like a red wine kind of red.
