hollow sugar maple seeds

Last fall, I gathered a few dozen sugar maple seeds from a few trees. I planted several in pots and let them winter over outside, and left some on a shelf in my garage.

After only three germinated this spring, I dug up several others and broke them open. Most of them were completely hollow! I looked at the ones that had been on the shelf, and it was the same thing. I was really surprised, since all of them looked round and full. I would have guessed that if no embryo had formed, the seed coat wouldn't fill out.

Is it normal for a large %age of sugar maple seeds to be total duds like this? Could I have done a float test in the fall to figure out which ones were viable?
