Lawn Tractor Not Starting - Craftsman DYT 4000
Comments (3)Yep, I would like to know if it had oil in it also and where on the dip stick? In the XXXXXs or none appears? Some things that may help? take the spark plug out. Now there is no compression build-up. The engine should free spin. If it don't remove the starter. try turning the engine by hand as suggested. engine spins. Test the Starter using jumper cables and battery. Engine don't spin go to the bottom see if the drive belt or clutch and belt is bound up. If all is free then as suggested start at the flywheel end to see if you can find external problem why the engine would spin....See MoreCraftsman Lawn Tractor Won't Start
Comments (65)Seat switch connector has a built in "shorting bar" which will close the kill circuit when the connector is unplugged from the switch. Unplugging the connector from the switch gives the same results as if the seat is not occupied. Seat switch is just one switch in the safety interlock circuitry that can cause the engine to have no spark. The brake pedal interlock switch is actually 2 switches in one assembly. One of the brake switches is dedicated to starter inhibition, and the other switch is to kill spark and stop the engine. The PTO switch also has a circuit dedicated to the kill wire. You can disconnect the kill wire from the magneto to see if that restores spark. If doing that restores spark, something is grounding the kill wire somewhere. Could be a chafed wire....See MoreCraftsman Lawn Tractor Problem
Comments (31)Well thanks jim98520, I've been "around the block" a few times (mechanically speaking). I've had "good mentors" (mostly because I sought them out) all my life. But I am not the most important member on this forum, there are many who have spent a lot more working hours in the OPE field than I have. I have posted some incorrect info on this forum myself (sorry about your yard), but USUALLY, the more knowledgeable, experienced members stand me up straight, and I promise not to do it again. I do this because of people like my sister, and some aunts and cousins. People who want to try saving some money by DIY. People who want to have a second or third (or more) opinion about their "ailing tractorwhatever". People who have been ripped off (or think they might have been). This forum gives folks a means of getting info and opinions that they could not purchase for any price (haha, I visited a "website" once that "was charging" for answers! Yuk, yuk....YUCK!) Sorry about whatever circumstances have led to your "censorship" (if that be it). It "chillingly" reminded me of getting "chastised" (along with one of my bosses) at work. I sent an "innocent e-mail" to "a vendor" that contracts with my employer. Well, the contact person at the "vendor" forwarded my request for technical data to his boss who forwarded it to my "boss's boss's boss". Of course, all that trickled back down and first thing I know is my boss's boss is ticked at my boss. My boss (though he knew in advance about my intent) said "I guess we better not do that anymore." I said, "I bet your right about that." You might have to come up with a "different psuedonym" (psst. don't tell anybody at work about it)....See MoreCraftsman DYT4000 engine dies when you let out clutch in neutral
Comments (46)Hey, this is great stuff!!!! I had this problem with my Craftsman Lawn Tractor "it starts, runs, then turns off as soon as I take my foot off the brake. I read all your comments and ran out to my tractor. I then removed the 2 bolts holding the springs and seat switch, removed the seat switch from the housing unit but left it connected to the wiring. Then I put the housing back under the seat (without the seat switch in place) and laid the seat switch down under the seat. Now when I let my foot off the brake my tractor continues to run. The only thing is that now when I get off the tractor it continues to run but who cares. I always wished it wouldn't stop running when I got off anyway. Dreams to come true. Thanks guys for your wisdom....See Morejabbers
