Which perennials rebloom after deadheading?

Liatris, gaillardia, various bellflowers, phlox, monarda, veronica....any of those? what else? I can't list everything that I have (which are most of the things you can find at generic garden centers), and my gardening books don't really mention this. I know the peonies, lilies, clematis won't.

Wondering where to direct my efforts in this extra hot weather.

Monarda may a little bit if cut back, watered,and fertilized. Veronica definitely will. Some other ones that are fairly reliable rebloomers include fernleaf yarrow, feverfew, most of the ornamental catnips. Butterfly bush has a pretty extended bloom season, from July until hard freeze for me.

Phlox may,if cut early, but not as abundantly as the first time. Out of bellflowers(I assume Campanula?) Campanula trachelium definitely will rebloom, especially Bernice. Campanula lactiflora will. Others that may bloom more with continuous removal of spent flowers: Helenium(depending on variety), Anthemis, Delphinium(depending on variety and not guaranteed). Centaurea atropurpurea and orientalis. Rudbeckia Herbstsonne(Autumn Sun) definitely. Echinops will send up flowering stalks, but not always make it before the frost.

Rich, I take all of my pictures in high resolution then use the free program Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) to resize my pictures and save them as a reduced version (usually 640x480 size which results in files of about 140 KB. This is the perfect computer screen size. Then I upload these to my photobucket account and cut and paste the tags into my email. Hope this helps. Adam: We live in Wilmington NC and I am lucky to have a well so irrigation has not been a problem. The back of the house has a raised, very large patio --was cement aggregate that I have laboriously handpainted to look like brick (see separate album on that adventure!) Finished it finally last week too. It is such a large area, it was just too visible and the painted bricks help it to stay down viaually. We have been here for 8 years and I started the garden from scratch 7 years ago, but since I throw everything I have at each new adventure, I tend to overdo things as you can see. Thank you for all the kind words about my garden, etc. (you can tell I love it can't you?) The vine around the porch (both front and back) is Confederate Jasmine an evergreen for us with the most intoxicating scent when in bloom during May. I do have lab lab on the white garden screen in some of the photos. Love Daffodils, do not enter any just love having them. Thanks for all the comments on my photography too, if you take enough pictures, you are bound to get some good ones and with digital photography I take thousands! Instant gratification and no film to buy/develop. I am on my third camera now. I have so many more great photos, not all of them are on the photo site. I love to make CD slide shows with music and send them to my sister in Massachusetts (New Bedford) since she is not able to visit and can tour the garden too. Glad to share it with you. Pauline

Reviewing this thread... Tracy, on the platycodon, that comes in pink/blue/white right? If I remember right, that plant had no pests for me, and stayed in one place for quite awhile, not needing to be divided. The staking was the only drawback and if I remember right, didn't someone tell me there is a dwarf version, that doesn't need staking? I did want to mention that it is the campanula family and if you have trouble with groundhogs, woodchucks, these are one of their favorite foods. All of you in areas that don't have the Lily Leaf Beetle are SO lucky. I would grow a whole yard of them if I didn't have them. With peonies in part sun, I am so surprised they bloom there. Wondered if anyone wanted to recommend particular varieties that are their favorites? Also, do I remember right, that Tree Peonies take more shade than herbaceous? I would think a peony is very well behaved. Hardly ever needs dividing, pest free right? Does it need fertilizing? Again, it needs staking right? I put a tomato cage around the only one I have, but it was too small to need it this year. I've had that Silver Mound Artemesia at the edge of a bed and it was very well behaved, didn't reseed or travel, increased slowly. Nice silver accent and very neat. A number of people have recommended grasses. I love grasses, but early on discovered two issues to be careful with. Some grasses are very big reseeders, especially in the warmer zones. Some are runners which would scare me to death in my yard. So I chose to add a clump grass..pennisetum, not known to reseed here in my zone. I have had one in the same location for 7 years that has not reseeded even one little seedling, has been carefree, about 1.5ft high x 2 ft wide. Has been slow to develop that 'dead in the middle' problem. I really enjoy that grass. The only drawback to remember with even the clump grasses, is they are hard to move, so be sure you really like it where you put it. [g] We attempted to dig it up to divide it about 4 years ago, and gave up. I think we will need an ax to get it out of there. Luckily it is in a place that I can keep it for life..lol. Lychnis...tiffy, were you talking about coronaria? I have that plant in a front yard bed and it has been a heavy reseeder for me. Not sure if it is staying. I didn't know it was a butterfly or hummingbird attractor. I will have to keep a look out for them. Oregano...is that a perennial plant or an annual? I have seen some amazing oregano that are very decorative. I do use herbs in pots in the veggie garden area. Which type do you have tiffy? Veronicastrum...is Culver's Root, right? Does that stay in place and/or reseed? How tall does it get and what do you plant it with? Hellebores...jennie...I just added two plants last year and they have been very welcome. Almendra, I have many varieties of daylilies growing in my gardens and I am trying to get a few seed pods off of all of them this year. I will send seeds to the cottage garden exchange, or if you just want to get on my member page and email me I could send you some if I get plenty. I started over 200 in my master bathroom under lights last winter (overkill, I know, but once I started I couldn't stop myself!!) from seeds I won on e-bay. Some of them i gave away, some I didn't plant soon enough and the heat got them, but I have at least 100 of them in the gardens in designated areas right now, and I can't wait to see what I get!!!

The best way to encourage rebloom is force the plant through a cold spell, greenhouse style. Not sure what the turnaround time is, but there is a critical period between entering and exiting dormancy, even on new growth shoots, where the plant "decides" where to produce the florets. This has appeared to be a "ONE-TIME" deicision per year (unless forcing). This year, I had numerous free-flowering hydrangeas in pots, you know, the ones that are supposed to produce flowers on lateral buds as well as terminal buds. But a late freeze of 27.7F hit, which knocked back the outer 10-20% of growth. Since, there have been literally no flowers on lateral buds except for on a few plants. Why? My theory. There are really too many plant names to get into specifics, but some like Claudie, Perfecfion, Firelight, Blue Wave have zero flowers. Same was the case for hydrangeas in the ground. Plenty of old wood survived this year, but no flowers. Harmony, Nikkoes, Expression, Merritt's Supreme etc etc. Because of erratic weather and climate, controlling or encouraging this that and the other is nearly moot and is entirely left to chance. Your best bet is to indeed enclose the ENTIRE plant til around 5/1, unless you live in an area where there are no freezes after the plants break dormancy. But I'll tell you one thing, the growers and retailers and branders won't share this information with you (Dirr's even in it for the $ and cannot paint the whole picture for you). Well, except maybe one of the old shrub gurus at your local nursery. They can smell fads a mile away. Bigleaf hydrangeas weren't really meant to grow in any kind of climate other than that than which they were originally found. The closer you get to replicating it, the better off you are (case study: Azores). Not to say they'll never adapt to different climates via evolution, but the odds of that in our lifetimes are slim to none.

trace down a stalk .. at every leaf junction.. if you see a little bud .. and cut off all above.. that bud will trigger growth..

and the end result of that growth is a flower ... if there is enough season for it to all develop ...

the easy plant to see this on.. is a rose.. since all the stuff is be enough to see easily ...

so on pholx.. e.g. ... they will do it.. but probably not for a month.. and then there probably might not be enough time for a third ...

i dont care what your list has.. just look for the dormant buds.. and cut a few stalks.. and make your observations as to which are worth your effort.. and which arent ..

and that is how most of us learned how to do it.. before we decided we were too lazy to mess with it all.. and were just happy with the first wave of flower .. lol ..

experimenting .... and learning about the buds is the easy part.. lol.. its remembering what you learned this year.. NEXT YEAR THIS TIME ... that is usually the problem.. consider a journal by plant name ...

ps: the ONLY function a plant has.. is procreation.. and the only way to set seed.. is to flower.. so if you do NOT allow it to seed.. in theory.. it will keep trying too .. until it goes dormant ... so.. in theory .. technically they should all reflower.. until they do .. now.. whether they all adhere to this rule.. who knows.. lol .. [of course now i think of hosta.. and they wont reflower.. but they will crown divide.. so perhaps they can cover the procreation.. by means other than seed production .. but then they dont have dormant buds on the flower stalks].. can you tell its 104 outside.. and i have nothing better to do right now?? .. lol ..

Thanks all three. 100F here today too; so I am just thinking about deadheading, not actually doing it!

My book (DiSabato-Aust) lists Liatris spicata, Gaillardia, Campanula, Phlox, Veronica spicata, and Monarda didyma as perennials that rebloom/extend bloom if deadheaded.

the experimenting.. is what aids me.. IN REMEMBERING.. since i did it myself ...

as compared to getting one million hits on a web search.. and reading until i am so confused.. that i cant even remember my name.. let alone where the door is.. to get out into the garden ...

regardless.. mollys link is a pretty good overview .. and a list .. but the question is.. will i remember where i put the link.. come next summer.. lol ... oh yeah.. it will be in the favorites folder.. with the other 2 bazillion garden links i have .. lol ...

Some of the type 2 prune clematis will rebloom after removing spend blooms and cutting back a bit if the season is long enough. If you ask on the clematis forum about your particular variety (if it is a type 2 pruner) someone may be able to tell you whether yours is one that is likely to rebloom for you. Type 1 and 3 in general won't rebloom.

My tall phlox blooms for much longer (and seeds around much less) if I deadhead.

You will find that experience will dictate which plants respond well to deadheading and which do not. For example, my Shasta daisies ('Silver Princess') showed no signs of producing new flowers at the lateral leaf nodes but was producing tons of basal foliage with buds, so I went ahead and cut down to the basal foliage.

Just because a plant is on the list doesn't mean your particular plant will respond -- just that those species tend to benefit from deadheading. If anything, there is an aesthetic benefit. DiSabato-Aust writes that you may improve the longevity of perennials that tend to flower themselves to death (Shasta Daisies, Gaillardias) by allowing basal foliage to develop at the expense of current growth.
