LOL Hello, my name is Iris and I am a seedoholic ....

and I am sure all the fine gardeners I have met here on GW can be held accountable as my enablers ;-) my SO and I went in Lowes the other day so I could pick up a bag of potting mix for WSowing and of course the new seed display they just put out stopped me in my tracks ... my SO looks over to me and says " Iris, do you NEED more seeds ? " HA ... he knows better , its not about NEED ... its about WANT ! and I have run out of WSowing containers ... I was just looking in the fridge to see what is almost empty LOL ... and I need to call my friends who are saving milk jugs for me and see if they have some ready for me ;-)

Last year, I ran out of milk jugs, so I emptyed the milk into a juice container,hubby went to pour himself some "juice"and just about dropped the container, he said,'what the heck is wrong with this juice, then he just looked at me and shoke his head,we do what we gotta do, right!

The seed catalogs are hitting my mailbox and I think I should see what I NEED? I just logged on to Ebay to check on seeds from a few sellers from whom I've bought seeds but fortunately I was able to control myself and log off before I purchased any.
MUST NOT buy any more, trade for any more, or snatch any more seeds...must...have...strength...

I have several people who save containers for me, but I believe they all think I'm crazy! I have one co-worker who was bringing me several jugs a week but then she just stopped... it turns out, she's going to try WS. I'm excited for her but bummed at the same time. I NEED those jugs!! I'm starting to use anything & everything I can come up with!!

While my SO and I sit here watching TV I quietly giggle to myself cause I'm really reading about "WS seed enablers". SO looks at my crosswise, I read him a couple of the entries I can particularly relate to (Iris' trip to Lowes), tell him how glad I am that he didnt throw away the 'disposable' relish tray we emptied last night (I dont hafta tell you why...would make a great place to sow!!)......SO looks at with concern and says "I need to find you some professional help" hahaha

Pvick - I wish I were quite that organized. I am always amazed at your balcony and how much you manage to get on there! How big is it? But right now I am trying to just not buy anymore seeds for a while. I have plenty to WS and DS when the time is right. With finances kind of tight right now better to come on here and vent a little :-)

Yup!! Been there, done that too--all of it. Last year I had more seeds than I could possibly sow in a decade but that didn't stop me from gathering every ripe seed pod in my own garden as well as the neighbors.' Fortunately for me they all just say, "Oh, go ahead and take them!" Most are older and have no interest. The others are so busy running around all the time, they can't be bothered. I try to pay by planting things in their gardens. They don't seem to mind me doing that either.

Having winter sown nearly 500 milk jugs last year, sober reality kept me from ordering too many more seeds via mail. I actually ordered just 8 seed types and one was an heirloom French Romaine lettuce called Cos Rouge de Hiver. Smallest quantity I could order was 5,000 seeds so some friends and I divided them amonst ourselves. That's still enough seeds for each of us to supply several major restaurant chains. Ya just gotta love seeds--so much power & potential in an economy-sized package!!!

I wish I was that organized PV!! My whole kitchen table has become my seed work area. There's not much room left for eating there! I tell my hubby that I'm working on getting it cleaned up, but then he gets the mail and another bubble envie or two or three is delivered. He just shakes his head and laughs. :-)

cAROL - I am a definite seed sicko! I've got upwards of 600 packs documented in a database, with envelopes of seeds still to be catalogued. A lot of them go back to 2001 when I first started down this addictive path. Don't even know if what I have is still viable. I haven't bought or begged a seed in over a year now (well, maybe one or two exceptions)- doesn't make sense to acquire any more. I was acquiring seed for every plant that caught my eye - which was almost every one in existence. Truly pathetic!

kmpsmom - my balcony is 20'x6'. A few years ago, they did balcony repairs (in December!) and I had to bring eveything inside for a few days. What a mess! But I was able to remember just how large it was with nothing on it!

hostarookie - the rest of my apartment should be as organized. The dining room looks like a gardening supply house. Apartment living is really not conducive to the kind of gardening I like to do!

ladyrose - yup, those are movies you see. I especially like the old black-and-white classics. My fresh brother refers to them as "old movies for the old lady"!

Are any of you DC, VA and MD folks going to the Washington Gardener Seed Swaps? I just finsihed packing my annual donation to their goodie-bags--so, being as I am Enabler- Prime, I thought I'd give you all a heads up ;-)

You'd croak if you saw all my seeds. I have an entire Ikea shelving unit stuffed with them in shoe boxes (all nicely organized) - caveat: I do use them for my clients, and for classes I teach. So I just HAVE to load up every year...:)

I have 3 photo boxes full, plus a couple quart sized ziplock baggies.

Last year, I participated in a Seed Clean-Out swap on the Round Robin forum, which helped get rid of seeds for edibles that I wasn't planning on using anytime soon. The things nobody else in the swap wants, gets donated to Need4Seed, which supplies veggie seeds to those who can't afford them. Sign-ups for this year's swap are going on now.

In the past, I've sent seed to the newbie project that usually runs every winter on the WS forum. BTW, does anyone know if Bakemom is doing that again this year?

I know it's hard to let go of perfectly good seeds, but I'd rather they get used, than sit in a box till they are no longer viable : )

You definitely have a point, Bonnie! I'm just so afraid to give out seed and not have them grow anything! For that reason, I don't like to trade - I'd rather just give them away, with that caveat. But, so far, so good - at least, no one has complained to me yet. Hope they weren't just sparing my feelings.

I am in the process of trying to update my inventory, which is mostly futile, since I'm constantly participating in swaps, but I like to get it done once a year if possible. So I glanced at the number of entries in my Excel document ... and it's over 800!!! I must have my boxes packed a lot tighter than yours, LOL!

Because of generous Winter Sowers, seed snatching and not being able to pass up a seed rack I have 2 large boot shoe boxes to "hoard" my seed in. Last year I got annuals and veggies for 3 cents a pack....I was squealing with delight in the store at my find....DH says I need help.

Since they make shows about all types of hoarder out there maybe they should make one about "seed hoarders" lol.

The good news is that I sent a newbie envie out the other day and got id of most of the seeds that I will not be sowing. Now I just have to WS my perennials and then the annuals and I should be able to pass more along.

But then come summer and fall I'll be right back where I was, too many seeds and not enough time or space to use them. It is a vicious cycle! LOL

I went to lunch today with DH and my DD (8 years old) at a local restaurant where I, um,... "collected" some hosta seeds last fall.

My girl says to me, "Mom, are you going to steal some more seeds from here?"
