Ground Cherries? (physalis)

I have some Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry seeds from a trade that I'm anxious to sow. Has anyone tried winter sowing them?

Someone sent me some ground cherry SEEDLINGS in a trade over the summer and they did NOT transplant well. They went limp and all eventually died. I don't think it was the fault of the person mailing them. The other plants they sent me were fine, so it made me wonder if it's just one of those things that doesn't like to be moved. Or maybe it was just me.

From what I've read, ground cherries are a perennial usually grown as an annual.

So - I'm wondering if they are frost tolerant at all or if I need to start them late like an annual. ?

Also wondering if they would benefit from being planted deeper like some people do with tomatoes. Has anyone tried that?

Just for insurance, I'm going to try to start a few in my window sill too, so I would appreciate your experience (good or bad) with winter sowing or otherwise. Thanks. : )
