Starter Problem JD345

I have a JD 345, when I turn the key to the "ON" position the starter immediately engages. Is this a soleniod problem or something more?

First guess would be the ignition switch is bad.
Also look for melted wires in the harness that attaches to the ign. switch.

I agree with the switch. These machines have safety measures that prevent the starter from kicking unless they are happy. Is the brake on, et al?

Most seed packets for curcurbits (squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons, etc) say to start seeds 3-4 weeks before planting them outside. We also know that cucurbits are more sensitive than other plants (such as tomatoes or peppers) to staying in their pots too long, so I would err on the side of LESS time in pots. They don't like their roots disturbed, so you don't want them to get too many roots in the pots. Tomatoes don't mind having their roots disturbed as much, because they love growing new roots. I plan to start my curcurbits this coming weekend (May 15), and then plant them in 2 weeks on Memorial Day weekend. If I don't get them in then because the weather is crappy, it will be okay, because they can hang out for a week or two in their pots without trouble. But I definitely wouldn't want to go longer than that.

Yes, a battery connected the wrong way, will spin the starter shaft backwards, but the gear will not run up to connect with the flywheel ring gear. there have been a lot of starters replaced by folks who didn't realise the problem! The positive (+) cable must go on the + post on the side of the starter, and the negative (-) post must go to the frame of the machine or the starter housing. Of course, this is a simple way of explaining it and a simple test.

Bingo! Bingo! I Solved The Blower's Problems In My Sleep. In about an hour I Had The Monster Ready For Some Leaves Next Week. A Manual Would Have Been Nice. Putting the blower back together made me realize the blower housing d/n have to come apart but off. Such as: Removing the blower (1 nut) and 4 screws to rem the engine and recoil from the bottom blower housing, 5 screws to get to the recoil on bottom of engine off. I felt I would have to see something different since there is no attempt of recoiling after hearing something slip (as the spring). I felt I saw no way the spring could slip, due to a good lock at the O/S dia and auto catch I/S dia. I made a correction on the coil spring's cover (up vs down) that I c/n see how it mattered but I guess it did because it works fine now. The Bottom Line, It's Good To Have A Manual, Plus Old Experiences!! Again, "Some Jobs Are Not Worth The Time vs Personal". I can remember shops saying the work is not worth our time, "But This Is What You Can Do To Fix It". loger

One thing, which I keep mentioning, is leaky intake gaskets. It's a very easy thing to eliminate, by spraying WD-40 or some other combustible spray around the intake gasket area. If it smooths out, you'll have an idea of the problem, if it doesn't, look elsewhere. Of course the WD-40 won't cure the problem, only isolate it. In your situation, when everything is cold, the parts would be contracted for a possible leak, as it warms they will expand to possibly seal the leak.

The brake is on, the engine turns over but will not fire. The last time I used the tractor I noticed that the starter was making a sound as though it wasn't engaging properly. Almost like the battery was low. The last attempt to start, is now the current problem that I have.

Disconnect the small wire to the solenoid.
That will narrow it down to a bad starter switch (or circuit), or a bad solenoid.
Which engine does this have? (should have asked that first)

The engine is a 20hp liquid-cooled model, I'm going to disconnect the small wire to the soleniod and see what happens.

I disconnect the small wire to the soleniod and turned the key to the "on" position and it did not try to start. I then put the wire back on the soleniod and turned the key back to the "on" position and it tryed to start. From this I would believe that it is indeed the soleniod?

Hmmm ... I don't think so. The "on" position, shouldn't feed any voltage to the solenoid, which it sounds as if it's doing. Only the "start" position should do that.

Agree with tmajor.
You should only have 12V on that wire in the CRANK position.
Either the switch is bad or you have a shorted wire in the harness to the switch.
If you have an OHM meter, remove the connector off the back of the switch and the small solenoid wire at the solenoid.
Check continuity of the small solenoid wire at the solenoid end to the other terminals on the connector. S is the only one that should show continuity.

I believe that all 325's, 335's and 345's use the same ignition switch/circuit board assembly. Both of these components are made together as one part. You have to replace both as a unit. $76.00 last time I checked. I believe your problem is in this assembly. The manual says the only way to trouble shoot this part is to replace it.
