FWIW: Here is my disease report in this my first year as a no fungicide/pesticide year. The roses are listed by bed and I am amazed that there are not more roses defoliated by BS. Of course, it is early yet.

That's it. So far this season I have sprayed with AACT 4 times approximately 3 weeks apart. Other than the general spring dose of fertilizer, mulching and weeding, the roses have had nothing special done to them. Most varieties have midge to one degree or another. There are also the usual bugs eating on their leaves but not too much damage there. Most of the repeat bloomers are in their second flush and the JBs have just started and having a great time. I plan to spray with the organic cedar oil extract as soon as it arrives.

I hope this will help someone. All in all, I'm encouraged.

A bold experiment! We are hearing such good things about AACT. And I know that central Pennsylvania is a humid place where disease pressure is strong. I look forward to hearing more about your garden results as the summer wears on.

Many retail outlets are indicating that it has been discontinued by the manufacturer. We have had several products like Calypso and Tourismo that were discontinued by the manufacturer, yet we were still able to get the product from distributors and the manufacturer was still listing it until all supplies had been exhausted. Check some online listings for Spectracide Triazicide and you will see that many indicate that it has been discontinued. It may also be that Spectracide has discontinued only certain sizes. Because of the whole bee toxicity thing, many products are seeing a major slowdown in retail sales and those products are being discontinued in conjunction with their lack of sales in the retail market.. I know that Bonide has completely changed the chemistry of its Fruit Tree Spray because of the phase out of carbaryl. It used to contain Captan 12%, Malathion 6%, Carbaryl .3% and a spreader sticker. Now it has a new name of Fruit Tree & Plant Guard and contains Lambda-Cyhalothrin .05%, Pyraclostrobin 3.06% and Boscalid 5,622%, yet Bonide still shows their Fruit Tree Spray listed on their web site. They discontinued the Fruit Tree Spray last year. I only know because I went to college with the regional sales rep and he told me last spring that they had discontinues it.

Oh, Ann. I would wish all your roses immunity from now until forever, especially the most treasured ones. They are much more than garden plants. The sneaky relentlessness of this contagion is enough to make a rose gardener stark raving mad! Here's hoping for our friend science to point toward a light in the tunnel and for everyone in horticultural and agricultural fields to recognize and act on this very real and voracious threat. Thank you so much for all your contributions to our learning on this forum! Erasmus, I applaud your method and thoughts on RRD spread. I think you are spot on about vigilance. Wildfires start with a cigarette, firecracker or downed power line. Identifying and properly removing and disposing of the first spark can go a long way toward containment as we work toward eradication. Any large monoculture planting can cause huge ecological problems, and a swathe of roses which potentially hosts RRD can become one of the ugliest of ornamental disasters! No plant is maintenance free, but installing roses--Knockouts or any other "disease resistant" variety--in an unsupervised area is especially foolhardy. The marketing implication "plant, water, whack and ignore" can produce devastating consequences for the entire community and far beyond. Genetics may eventually unlock extremely useful information for future breeding and cultivation, but it's not going to alter the current course of this disease. Installing plantings of roses without continuous educated oversight and care is just asking for trouble. Even individual roses strung across private gardens can creat pathways of infection. Residential gardeners, along with every landscaping company and nursery, need to receive four alarm information about RRD. And then there are the unaddressed fields of "wild roses" which are not closely monitored by the highway or agricultural depts. Sue, The dark spots on the lower surface sound like lace bugs. Whitish specks on the upper surface of leaves and dark spots varnish-like on the bottom are symptoms of Rhododendron Lace Bugs, Stephanitis rhododendri, and Azalea Lace Bugs, Stephanitis pyrioides, small insects with transparent wings on under-surface of leaves.. This insect hatches early in spring as the new foliage begins to mature and its numbers may build to damaging levels with successive generations. Lace bugs reach their peak in late summer and do their worst in sunny, exposed sites. Spiders are important predators of lace bugs and since they shy away from sunny, hot places, plant your azaleas where there is some shade. Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or a systemic insecticide may spare your azaleas the damage if applied in spring when the first hatchlings are noticed. Care must be taken to spray the lower surfaces of the leaves where the lace bugs live. Moving a plant to an area with more shade may alleviate the problem. Lace bugs are more prevalent on certain varieties. Cottony masses on underside of leaves are a symptom of egg masses of the Cottony Azalea Scale, Pulvinaria floccifera. They are up to 1/2 inch long. Control is the same as with other scale insects. The scale insects are what secrete the sugary substance that becomes sooty mold growth on stems and petioles. This includes Azalea Bark Scale, Eriococcus azalea, and Cottony Azalea Scale, Pulvinaria floccifera. These small sucking insects feed on the bark and exude a sticky substance that turns the stems black. A scale infestation is indicated by sooty mold on leaves, yellowing of leaves, and twig dieback. This scale is most obvious from May through June when white egg sacs may be found in twig forks. Heavy infestations over several seasons may kill plants. Overwintering immature scales (nymphs) are about 2 mm long, gray, and are usually found in twig forks. This scale primarily attacks azalea and rhododendron, but has also been found on andromeda, maple, arborvitae, willow, poplar, and hackberry. Azaleas can tolerate low populations of this scale without injury, and if there are no yellowing leaves, no treatment is necessary. Beneficial predators and parasites will usually provide adequate control of light scale infestations. Examine egg sacs for holes which indicates control by parasites, and look for predators such as ladybird beetles. To control heavy infestations, spray dormant plants with a late oil spray to kill developing nymphs on twigs. If necessary a 2% summer rate of horticultural oil may be applied in July after all of the eggs have hatched.

Yes, Strawchicago My family was sad today too:) This would have been such a necessary precident:) I manually tore some outer balled leaves from Kordes Perfecta that was balled and it opened:) You (2) are more rose enthusiastic than I. I got the EMT metal conduit to cover my peas, and now I realize I have to draw a pattern and return the metal bender bc it is not sufficient for what I need. I got 6 mil plastic and agribon was delivered today) I made an inner circle core out of hardware fabric and put a metal drain on top. Hardware fabric is a real pain to work with:) Thank goodness I was wearing long pants, that metal fabric is SO though to work with. The aeration cores make a big difference in attracting BSFL and they help SO much in heating the pile. The Urban Farmer says to accept what you have planted now is as much as you can for the winter and to protect that with plastic. He is not in favor of agribon bc he says it allow the ground to freeze. That's true:)

I'm encouraged too, Barbara. If yours do well and mine bomb, I may try adding the AACT. I ordered the Teaming with Microbes book and maybe will add it in next year.

Thanks for the update - and how do you like the Pioneer roses you've gotten? I'm interested in Mier Y Teran. Glad to hear it's clean!

Contrary, AACT is Actively Aerated Compost Tea. I'll provide a link. I use these folks brewer and their tea kits although you can easily make your own brewer and use your own compost.

Rosefolly, I never thought of this experiment as bold, but I guess here in BS heaven where most roses are stretched to their limit it is. I'm just getting old and tired of spraying every two weeks. I'm also fed up with spraying pesticides, which I did for rose midge and I still have them.

Gean, I think you have made a good investment in the book order. Let us know what you think.

The two pioneer roses I have are good ones. The better of the two is by far Thomas Affleck. Mier y Teran is a midge magnet and most bugs seem to like this rose. TA hardly ever gives me cause to worry. He just keeps on blooming. Also, MyT is not as cold hardy as TA. It's first spring in my garden he died to the ground. This year he had much taller canes-the winter was much milder. Very pretty rose and blooms well when midge aren't attacking. Right now he is about 3 feet tall and I know this rose can reach 8 feet as he did his first season in my garden.

A word of caution about AACT. Don't regard it as a silver bullet. It is not meant to be a complete fungicide or pesticide. Its purpose is to improve the garden environment, to keep a balance of good organisms in the garden-plant and soil. Years of spraying fungicides and pesticides do some damage, and it is likely to take time to correct the balance. It can also be used in conjunction with pesticides and fungicides. The recommendation is to follow the fungicide/pesticide spray with AACT. That's just too much spraying for me.

First year roses are sometimes not representative. You have some pretty resistant roses and some that are really BS prone. I would expect that your next year report will be very different. Sorry to be a pessimist. But there is no way Abraham Darby or Golden Celebration or Felicia, for example, will be clean in a long run in PA.

Olga, I'm not sure what you mean by "first year roses". Is that the first year without fungicides? If so, yes, I realize it will probably take 3 years to make a good judgment. Some I'm not willing to give 3 years as they are already badly spotted-like Louise Odier and Baron Gerod. I agree with you about Abe Darby and Felicia. Golden Celebration, I'm not so sure. He has been amazingly clean in mid-summer in the past when I've been real lazy about spraying. But, only time will tell.

The next questions are how much BS can I tolerate and how quickly will some of these roses recover (if at all)?

Great report, your list is giving me 'rose envy'. LOL

Can someone please tell me what is considered humid? In percentages please? Any maybe what is not humid. My inner geek needs this kind of information-sorry.

I think I misread yor post and thought you are talking about roses just planted this year. These roses can be not representative, probably they have some residual fungicide in their systems or something else. But I noticed for me that sometimes roses are clean during their first year and then the honeymoon is over, they get BS badly.
Your situation is obviously different, let's see how it will work. I will be happy to be wrong in my pessimism.

Olga, I must not have been very clear in my initial message. I can see how you would mis-interpret. Anyway, most of the roses have been there for at least 3 years, some for 9 years and only two since this spring. Yes, if I had planted all this spring (and broken my back in the process) this report would be useless. However, I'm as skeptical as you. We still have plenty of summer ahead and lots of unpredictable weather. Then there are the midge. Ugg!
