WS Nicotiana?

I saved seeds from a "Deep Purple" perfumed Nicotiana that I brought from W-mart last year. Can these be wintersown? Has anyone tried other larger varieties in zone 5 NE PA?

They did self seed in the pot from last year. I had seedlings everywhere at the end of summer. Would these re-seed and grow in the spring if planted in a bed? or save the seeds to start over?

I have winter sown three kinds with great results. Domino, Purple Sensation, and the tall Fragrant Clouds.

Yes, they've wintersown well for me, but in the last few years I've just let them self-sow:D

I'm with you, bakemom- most challenging spring ever. My garden beds are too wet to work. My jugs are so wet, the potting mix falls apart if I try to remove from jugs. Leaves are all yellow from too much water. Calendula that I planted out are about dead. When we had that short warm spell I moved my indoor stuff out to my porches. They're mostly coleus. Now it's so cold, the plants are living in my garage and my car is outside. We're running 10 to 30 degrees below normal. We've had 30" of rain year-to-date, while the norm is half of that. This year's full sized poppies in my garden were from self-sown seed from plants that were ws last year that didn't get full sized. Both my pink and my red monarda often have a double decker bloom. My self sown nicotiana Only the Lonely is still quite small but I expect it to grow to full size. I've been gone for a week and it is amazing to see how some of the plants have really grown with the hot weather. Oh, those "weeds" I'd been pulling and decided to let a few grow are blooming--verbena.

Wow, Peggy, tomatoes starting to form on your plants. That is something. good for you! :) I am just starting to plant tomatoes. Three kinds so far-Mountain Princess, Kellogg's Breakfast and one with no name but it is from seeds that one of my customers gave me from a huge, red tomato that she said had been grown from seeds that one of her relatives had brought over from Portugal. I grew it last year and the plant and tomatoes were huge, but the groundhog ate or ruined almost all of them. The KB was planted on the twenty first and is just showing through the soil a little bit today. The other two were planted on the twenty second and so should sprout either tomorrow or over the weekend. I have a few more varieties that I want to grow this year, but will start them over the next couple of weeks. I also have planted several kinds of peppers-sweet apple, mini yellow and orange sun--hot cherry bomb, fish, cayenne, medusa and explosive embers--hmm not sure what others right now--too lazy to go and look :) I may grow a couple of other varieties but just haven't made up my mind for sure. anyway I also have night blooming jessamine, heliotrope, abutilon, ageratum, datura-triple yellow and lilac lafleur, three cannas (from seed) and a castor bean and four dahlias (from seed--checking germination on older seeds) along with those I am also potting up brug cuttings and coleus and plectranthus(mona lavender) cuttings. The majority of my planting has been wintersown. All the containers are outside waiting for some warm temps to get them started. :) cactusmcharris I like the pics of your unusual plants. I love unusual! :) Ross, you reminded me that I have my calla lily 'in storage' so will have to make sure it is potted up in time to go out to the garden. donka nice list! I have WS nicotiana, petunias, foxglove, larkspur, poppies(annual) and lupines along with lots of others and am still not done. so.......anyone else? :)

Mulchy, 'Wall-'o-water' is a brand name for a water-filled plant protector (a circle of joined plastic tubes you set around your tender plant and fill with water). Using jugs or other 2L containers would work the same way. This is my first year using them, but I've heard they really help tomatoes and peppers and other tender growers that need extra help here in the Northeast. I figure they can't hurt the squash etc. (And if the germination is poor for the seeds the kids just planted, we can sow some more - but I'm hoping for warmer weather soon. It just HAS to be warmer this summer than the past two - doesn't it?? PLEASE tell me it will be warmer!!) Yes, I love to garden. Therapy is where you find it. My husband plays the pipe organ, my father flies model airplanes - to each their own. My husband and I have a joint dream: someday a new house with a huge great room for a pipe organ, set on 2 acres of land to garden. . . . Hey, dream big! Laurelin

Thanks Vera and dem_pa; I got a packet of them in the envelope from Trudi for WS tomatoes. Have never grown these flowers before and know nothing about them so this will be a lot of fun. Do you have any other tips to share about growing Nicotiana? Thanks in advance...

I've had good WS success with nicotiana 'Fragrant Cloud' and 'Lime Green.' LG self-sows. I don't know yet if FC self-sows; ask me in a few months, LOL. I'm sowing more of both, just in case. I live not too far north of you, gardeningwithlcgrace - near Binghamton, NY.

Oh!!OH!! A question I can answer. I am so excited. Last year I planted them for the first time. Loved them!!! I put them in a half wiskey barrel right next to my deck. They grew really fast and smelled wonderful. I did find that they needed support as the summer went on. This year I will put the support in when I plant them. They also took a lot of abuse. Our German Shepherd puppies figured out that they could crawl into the barrel from the deck. I would go outside and find a puppy sleeping in the barrel. lol.

Great!! I forgot to check for posts yesterday & now my questions are answered!!

Does anyone have a reliable source for purchasing seeds? I would post on the exchange page but the only things that I saved last year were marigolds, cosmos, & zinnia. I'd love to buy some of different colors and sizes with wonderful fragrances.

It sounds like I'll be shopping for some seed starting mix and planting my milk jugs full of my Nicotiana!! Yippeee!!

When I found my plants last year @ W-mart, they were dried out and not looking very good at all but there were 4 stems that were about 1 1/2 tall. They recovered wonderfully! The also needed support in my container on the deck.

Are there any other highly scented flowers that I should try? Thanks!! LC Grace
