Westerland Is A Big Climber

There was a thread about Westerland and other climbers last week which is long since gone. Someone wanted a current picture of Westerland covering my arbor and blooming. In the third year, W is thriving. Betty Corning clematis is growing with Westerland:

Harry, your Westerland is gorgeous! What patience you have to keep it in such beautiful shape. This one just grows and grows. Mine is a 10 1/2' shrub...in a corner, on no structure. It was the only place I had for it, but I like it natural, too. It's alway in bloom, and has no problem with diseases. Not a wimpy rose, for sure.:)

That must be the best Westerland I have seen :-) In my town there is a large bed of Westerlands in the shape of half a circle embracing a passage around a fountain. I have all ways liked this rosebed ever since it was planted. It looks good in rain and drought both summer and fall.

Do you have one plant on each side of the arbor?

I have trained my Westerlands to climb. They looked great in June. However, the second flush seems confined to the top. I am wondering if cutting it shorter in the spring would allow it to be bushier, and provide more bloom from the lower portion of the plant. It looks OK because the Betty Corning clematis has the lower half of the arbor covered. June flush:

I wouldn't touch it now. My experience with Dublin Bay was that it was neither healthy or hardy, so I strongly suspect that it's running close to the edge for you, and a bad winter could damage it severly. Next spring, I'd do some digging with a trowel, and see just how far down the bud union is. There are quite a lot of people who original plant with the bud union about at the soil line, with the understanding that the whole thing will settle, and it will end up about 2 -3 inches down. For zone 5, that is a perfectly reasonable level. So if it's sunk down to 6-8 inches, there is some room to maneuver. If it's higher than that, I'd seriously consider digging it out, regrading the bed, and replanting - in the spring.

I think the dry wall idea is excellent, too. Another thought: whatever you decide to grow there,if you get it bare-root, you might want to start out in a pot for it's first year. Now, something like P's HM or May Queen wouldn't need that, perhaps, but if it's a kind of "difficult" spot it might be just as well to make sure that the rose/s have a good robust root system to start with,which I find is easier to achieve if they are in a pot for the first year. But that's in my circumstances; remember, in my garden most plants only get auxiliary watering in their first year... That shot of the bank is so beautiful. What plants are shown?

Thanks. Yes, there are 2 plants each about 9-10' now.

Harry - thanks for posting those beautiful pictures. I think I'm gonna need a bigger trellis.

Mine hasn't bloomed yet, but it is about 3 ft tall now. I hope mine looks half as good as yours.

Hi Harry - I was the one who wanted to see your Westerland. It's gorgeous! You should make weaving canes your profession - people like me would be willing to pay for that service - honestly. I just put in a thread regarding my Westerlands - need advice with trying to grow them as casacading bushes and and with transplanting - mistakenly did not give them enough room.

Harry, I didn't say it at the time, of if I did, it was very gently, but I believed NO WAY NO HOW could you grow Westerland like that. Mine is like a tree. The canes are inflexible and they seem to do what they want and are hard to work with.

I'm officially delightfully proved wrong! Yours is fantastic. Good work! It's obviously having a love affair with the arbor...and you.
