Cut limb.......

So, yesterday, in a moment of sheer frustration, I cut off a fairly large double limb from my narrowleaf cottonwood. It was creating too much shade over the only area of my yard where I can put in a garden. I've been putting this off since we moved in 2 years ago. I've heard that it's not healthy to cut off any live growth from decidious trees, and if it becomes necessary, not to cut more than 20% of the tree. This might have been just a tad over 20%, maybe not. But this a massive tree, with quite a bit of deadwood, that has obviously been hacked at over the years, and overall, it seems to be pretty hardy. So, I'm hoping to do as much damage control as possible to help this poor tree heal. Obviously, it will be getting much more water than it ever has, so I'm hoping this will help, but what else can I do make it happy and healthy? I feel bad for cutting it, but I didn't see any other way. Any suggestions?
