Westerland or Royal Sunset????
Comments (4)Jess, I have had good luck with Westerland. Very hardy and vigorous here. It easily covered my 8' arbor by the third year. The color is great because it fades nicely from orange to a soft salmon-yellow. Good fragrance and fairly disease resistant here in BS heaven (HELL!). I do spray lightly. Year two: Year three: This picture shows the range of color over a weeks time (with Betty Corning clematis)...See MoreWesterland or Royal Sunset better for zone 7B?
Comments (14)dmny- thanks for the white recommendation. Iceberg sounds like a good choice. I'd really like to find something that repeats well. I ordered Sombreuil without researching the thorns and was shocked when I pulled it out of the shipping box! The prickles are huge, so probably not the best choice for next to the front door! Something about those jagged edges doesn't say "Welcome." Anyway, I found a place for Sombreuil in my side yard near the back deck where hopefully I can enjoy the fragrance but my kids won't get hurt on it. meredith_e, nice to hear from someone in my exact zone in addition to the other voices! I love the orangey- apricot tones, too, more than the yellows, in Westerland and Royal Sunset. Nice to hear it keeps those darker tones in the shade! I found a band of Royal Sunset at Burlington Roses if I can be patient enough for it to grow. Since the spot I'm looking to fill is on the front of my house, I'm anxious for it to get big. After doing more research, I came across Renae and Annie Laurie McDowell, which really piqued my interest, too! These roses sound like they might do nicely in this part shade spot and provide plenty of blooms. I was originally going for an apricot color, but I'd be willing to go pinkish. Maybe I should get them all......See MoreWesterland , Awakening, Autumn Sunset
Comments (16)Although we are both in zone 5a our winters probably are quite a bit different in snowfall amounts and some other factors that could make a difference in the surviveability of various climbers. Westerland has been struggling for me since I planted it 5 years ago. Part of the problem is it was not getting enough water due to a sprinkler not reaching it. That's been fixed and now sprouts a few long canes each year that are stingy with blooms. It's not planted deep but comes back each year after losing all it's canes. This year, it has one cane struggling to grow. I'll keep babying it as long as it survives the winters. Autumn Sunset is not protected but comes back strong each year. It dies back but never to the ground. This year it had 2-3 foot of green on the canes. It blooms heavily begining in early June and continues all summer. I have two, one planted on either side of a small arbor. Awakening was just planted last year but survived winter well with little dieback. My two Fourth of July have a similar habit as Autumn Sunset. New Dawn survived green almost to the tips. Berlin was a real winner regarding winter dieback. City of York, growing through a chain link fence also has lots of cane survival as did Dublin Bay, Coral Dawn, Darlow's Enigma, Clair Matin, and Leverkusen. I've planted a few more climbers climbers this year, Dortman, Pele', and Royal Sunset. Dortman and Royal Sunset should do well in zone 5a but Pele' will probably require severe pruning each spring....See MoreAnyone growing Royal Sunset?
Comments (4)I had this rose several years ago but I didn't have a good spot for a climber--it was only getting 4 hours sun daily. Even so it bloomed periodically and had really lovely soft orange fragrant blooms. I think if it had had proper sunlight it would have been terrific. I ended up giving mine away. Unfortunately, a couple years later it drowned when New Orleans flooded. :( It does need preventive spraying for blackspot, which I'm sure it was more susceptible to because I had it too much in the shade and without good air circulation. If you can grow typical hybrid tea roses, you certainly can grow this climber. In the time I had it, I did get a lot of compliments. It's a beautiful rose....See Morehollie_z9
