cloches

Has anyone used cloches after planting out? Or, to supplement WS containers and germinate right in the ground? Or to help along surprise volunteer seedlings?

In case you don't know what I mean, I have some plastic jugs from Tidy Cat and Sunny D that I'd like to cut the bottoms off, then place over plants and/or seeds right in the garden. I aso have a ton of glass spaghetti sauce jars that really need a use- but they don't have any holes for venting. I'm wondering if I can use them somehow (prop them up, maybe?)

Maybe there are other ideas to supplement WS with cloches? I'd be very interested to hear your experiences.
