tall garden phlox

I have one clump of phlox that is 2 years old. It has formed buds both years but the buds do not open. Does anyone have an idea why?

I really don't know, lilyfarmer. I had a plant of Bright Eyes and wouldn't bloom. Every year, the plant increased in size but no buds or blooms. I finally gave up and pulled it. I grow many different varieties, but have never had one that wouldn't bloom before.

I hope you get an answer from someone.

Well, my Nora Leigh didn't bloom for many years, but I didn't care because it was beautiful for the foliage. I probably never looked closely to see if there were buds.

I would monitor the buds for the duration and try to determine if something is eating them... or are they drying out... or do they get close and run out of time (frost)... or ...???

That's it!...and in checking my Indiana Wildflower book, I see it is a native here and ranges in color from red purple to white. Would this one maybe be referred to then as 'species' Phlox paniculata? I know there are many named varieties of it. Sue

Linda, I tried winter sowing some a few years ago but I wasn't successful. My Phlox Paniculata - and yes, they are perennials - used to just spread from the base. Having said that, I have been amending the soil and in the last couple of years, they have reseeded. I realized in 2005 that is what they were doing, so in 2006 I left some reseeders of 'David' (the almighty white one), and Laura (A purple/white) to see what would grow. The leaves are true to the parents. David reseeders are light in colour (leaves) and the plants are as vigorous as the parent. I should see some blooms this year if my dog keeps the deers away as she has been. So basically, if they reseeded here, then they can be winter sown. Maybe they need a full winter and the reason they didn't winter sow successfully for me was that I do most of my wsing in late Feb and March through April. Worth a try!

Do I cut the tall garden phlox back ?

I cut my phlox back to just a couple of inches above the base. Phlox foliage often gets a bit of powdery mildew late in the season so I want to get that out of the garden before winter. To collect phlox seed after the flowers fade they will form seeds. They are ripe when they are dark and I pluck them off as they ripen. Some put a nylon or small bag over the seed head to catch ripe seeds as the ripe pods open easily and seed falls to the ground. I no longer add winter mulch to my phlox as they are hardy and survive well without it. We've had a couple of nights in the twenties. The few clematis and mums that are blooming seem to be unaffected by the low temps. Same for several other blooming perennials. Think the temps need to be low for a longer period of time to end their bloom. In my zone pansies are more readily available and displayed in the spring. Some mornings they look terrible from being frozen but as they warm the foliage and blooms perk up and they are lovely again.

I loved all the suggestions. The upshot is that I waited until last week to get cuttings from a phlox that does not make seeds. I made a cutting chamber by inverting a clear plastic cake dome over a clear plastic cake dome turned upside down of the same size. I filled the bottom with soiless medium and perlite. The cuttings look very healthy so far; I cut off all the leaves except the top two or three, and there I cut most of them back. I was able to root hibiscus this winter using this method, but it was not but about 30% successful. I am hoping for better odds this time. I did use rooting hormone on them also.

Does anyone know where I can get the pink and white bicolored one? not sure what the name is, but I love it, and it smells heavenly too! Thanks in advance for any advice! -Jessica

I have a variety called Katherine which is pink and white bicolored but I've never noticed much of a scent. Mine also gets mildew despite being advertised as mildew resistant. :(

My mother in law has one and it is just gorgeous, and smells great! After seeing hers I decided that I had to have one! I did not order it from there though. Im not sure if they sell nice plants, or tiny ones. -Jessica
