Is this Queen Elizabeth Cl. worth saving?

I have just bought a home in the hill country of Texas with a Queen Elizabeth Cl.

The rose has cains that go nearly straight up to about 12 feet, and is almost completely defoliated from black spot except on the very top of the rose.

Is this rose worth saving, and how far can I prune the cains on this plant?

Since all the cains are growing straight up is it still possible to train the canes to grow horizontally?

'Climbing Queen Elizabeth' is junk. Not only does it not rebloom, it often doesn't flower at all in many people's gardens. Do yourself a favor and dig it out and plant something decent. Seriously.

On second thought I would recommend a different venue. If you want black spot resistant roses try either some of the Bucks noted for bs resistance or check out Palatine roses' website for the new disease resistant Kordes roses. If you are new to roses, I would recommend Palatine because they deliver huge bare roots that will do well in their first year. Then check out Chamblee's for Buck's - those will be one gallon potted plants and will need time to mature but how soon they mature also depends on the variety. I rooted a Folksinger cutting last winter and by the end of the growing season it was 4' tall. On the other hand, I got Quietness as a rooted seedling beforehand and it is still about 2'. I know that the mature height of Quietness is about 5'. Earth Song is said to be blackspot free, great bloomer and fragrant but I have no idea how fast it will mature - I just got it from Chamblee's. But again, to those who just start with roses I recommend to get great quality grafted plants to have satisfaction of growing roses relatively fast. You could also check out Pickering nurseries, they also list a large number of disease resistant roses. http://www.pickeringnurseries.com/ I would suggest a rose you didn't mention and that is Compassion - healthy, fragrant, good repeat and gorgeous. IMO, 'Peace, Cl.' is magnificent -- superior in every way to the bush form. I've always been mystified by the fact that the bush form was always a BS magnet in my garden, while its climbing sport remains healthy and largely disease free all season. I know a couple of other gardeners here in coastal Carolina who've made the same observation. It seems to me that when 'Peace' produced this sport, more was gained than simply a propensity to climb. I was surprised (and envious) to read above about a 'Peace, Cl' that blooms prolifically all season long. My plant blooms heavily in the spring and (sometimes) throws a moderate number of blooms in early to mid autumn. The climbing form of 'Peace' is indeed a rampant grower -- which, I think, has contributed to its less than stellar reputation. Some gardeners try to keep it in bounds by pruning it heavily, then complain bitterly because it doesn't produce. 'Peace, Cl' blooms only on old wood. Prune it heavily and regularly and you're guaranteed a bloom-free plant. If you don't have room for a magnificent (albeit essentially once-blooming), very rampant climber, forget about 'Peace, Cl'. Another climbing HT sport that I've been very impressed with is 'Gruss an Aachen, Cl'. Roses Unlimited is now the only U.S. source for that one.

Seattle Sue, I met Burling Leong once. Luanne and Carol and I went on a road trip down to the Huntington one year, and stopped by at Visalia to meet Ralph Moore. It was right around the time of his 100th birthday. We also met and chatted with Burling that day. She gave us each a cutting of Daphne odora, a wonderful plant. Someone -- I think it was Ralph Moore himself -- said that she was so good she could graft a plant on a bowling ball! I'm delighted to learn that she now has her own nursery. If the new Cl Crimson Glory I ordered doesn't do any better than the one I have, I will look into contacting her. Many thanks for the link. Jacqueline, it sounds as though you have a wonderful rose there. Did you find it easy to root? Like you, I have wondered if somehow I got the shrub form instead of the climber. This rose shows no indication of ever wanting to climb. Misidentified roses happen all the time. That certainly would explain a lot! And it would comfort me. I find CL prices can vary quite a bit by region, so for pricing I'd do some searches on your local CL for similar items and use that as an indictor. Since there can be many sofas/loveseats for sale, clever wording of your ad using descriptive search keywords as well as a descriptive heading can help your ad viewed by more potential buyers. Also, the timing of when you placed your ad can help as well since many people tend to look at furniture over the weekends. I find that a Friday posting gets more responses. That said, I would also second dilly_dally's suggestions to list separately. As you prefer to sell as a set, perhaps at least break up the sofa/loveseat as a set and sell the chair alone. I think you will get more $$ for it that way since it's easier to sell a chair by itself for someone looking to add it to either bedroom or living room and potential buyers can easily put it in a van or SUV--not so with the sofa/loveseat. Not all rooms will be large enough to accomodate so many pieces and the buyers who have that much space, may also have the $$ to purchase new. Good luck!

Well, if digging it out is too much work, you can cut it way down and it will either bloom (or not according to the previous poster), or you can train the new growth the way you want. I don't have enough experience to know how far down you can prune, but I do know that in mild climates roses don't really die, so you can't really hurt it in my opinion.

I wouldn't bother going to the trouble of cutting it down -- unless that's the first step in the process of digging it out.

If you want to grow a climbing rose, make your choices from either:
1. "Large-Flowered Climbers" -- that is to say roses that are climbers from the git-go -- NOT climbing sports of bush roses (like Cl. Q.E.). The latter as a group are not generous bloomers.
2. Tea-Noisettes (officially Noisettes) -- These babies love to climb, but they are great bloomers, and very fragrant. It's my understanding that they're pretty disease-free in your area.

You might take a day trip up to the Brenham area, to visit the Antique Rose Emporium. A wander around their display gardens inspires.

And use the HelpMeFind web site to find likely climbing roses. Use the Search, then Advanced-Search function, and look for Large-Flowered Climbers. You can literally spend hours in that digital "Wish Book."

Yes you can train it to grow horizontally. I have one and I've done it. However:

It's a once bloomer. Only Spring. A very sparse fall blooming

It constantly throws out 12 foot laterals. So unless you want to constantly prune or train those, you should get rid of it.

It is a black spot magnet, but responds well to spraying.

It is subject to late spring frosts, which kills the only significant flush (3 years in a row now!)

So. why do I keep it? I live to see this again:

It's actually much larger now, this was after I cut it back really hard. But as I said, I haven't had a decent bloom for 3 years because of late frosts.

Is this Queen Elizabeth Cl. worth saving?
