Young Lycidas problem

I bought this rose bare root in Jan or Feb and it has grown to 3 1/2 feet tall and it is blooming for the first time, but the stems are so lax the flowers are almost lying on the ground. What a pity because they are so pretty and very fragrant. I'm wondering if I have a cultural problem or whether I should assume its just too young for such big flowers and prune it way back.

No, mine does that too. Get a tomato cage or make a short cylinder of wire fencing to support the canes, instead of cutting them off. Baby needs to get strong--cutting off Baby's freshly stored energy ain't going to help.

Hi Maria, Thank you. I like the show that the Jasmine puts on annually, and am possibly going to add Arabian Jasmine near my RdV in the front yard. All of my own root roses, with the exception of two (purchased as one gallon plants), were planted in September when it began cooling off during the night. YL is a bare root rose on Dr. Huey, planted during the winter. The pot and roses in this side yard section; most of which are Austin's, all receive about two hours of early morning sun, and then thanks to the balcony and house, they are shaded or in open shade, then they receive about two to 2/12 hours of early afternoon sun. They are in total shade during the hottest part of the day. At my last home, I grew a floribunda in a pot where it remained for 5 years and thrived. It only received about 4-4.5 hours of sun. I have only grown one rose in a pot long term and tried to replicate the conditions. The Young Lycidas was potted in late January. Jaspermplants, I am purchasing a Bougainvillea today, for a pot I purchased yesterday:). I've read that they like cramped roots and do well in pots. I would not place roses in pots here either, except for the area in question. There's a large tree slightly in front but to the North of the area, plus a patio/ balcony and house to the east of it. Lynn, I was thinking about you today as I looked at Belinda. Last year I bought her as a 5g after seeing how bullet proof and covered in blooms in others posts. I was really wondering about what I did wrong when I brought her home because she seemed to do little more than thin growth and flopping giant buds and not in a shade I really really liked. But this year she looks much better. Those thin canes are thicker and she holds up her blooms better, But for me the best part is how much Mom loves her. I put her in a prime spot that she walks by a million times a day going back and forth to the garden and chickens. Mom comments that she likes all the roses, but Belinda is her favorite and she loves showing her off. I see what I wish was different, but mom sees her beauty. I checked out the structure of Lady of M today, seems she had thrown a similar cane that was cut shorter probably when she was packaged as a bareroot so I am thinking I can expect more mega canes.

I have recently been trying to really learn more about the different buggers since I have so many more roses now than I ever have had in the past. I watched him hang out on Young Lycidas for 2 days... not one bite taken out of Young Lycidas, but I did see him eating aphids! In the past I probably would have just knocked him off or squished him. But now I'm trying to watch the different buggers and learn which ones are which. This guy seems to be a meat eater, not a plant eater, so he can stay.

My vote goes 100% to Young Lycidas! He is a great rose; very beautiful and blooms a lot. I actually love the draping habit. The flowers of Falstaff are quite beautiful, but for me he is an incredibly stingy bloomer. The spring flush isn't that generous, and then after that, basically nothing. He might do better in this regard if I were to fertilize more, but for the most part, my rule is that roses have to do well not only in my climate, but also with the care I am willing/able to give them. I simply can't afford the time or $ to fertilize them more than their spring organics and the occasional top dressing with manure, etc. Anyway, given my rather austere rose regimen, I can tell you YL is a really good performer. And just gorgeous! Best of luck with whatever you decide!

Tomato cage - what a great idea. Mine is doing the same thing, and I have each of the canes with it's own little "sling-shot" piece of wood stuck in the ground, holding it up. A little tacky, but it works!

I find this is a very common 'problem' with some Austins (Claire Austin, Golden Celebration, Jude the Obscure). For the first couple of seasons, they are quite lax and flexible and really struggle to bear the weight of blossom. However, after a couple of seasons, especially with a decent pruning regime, they stiffen up nicely, getting extra girth and more basals. I also use a secondary support usually made up of old fruit tree prunings or hazel or willow or whatever comes to hand, really. Ideally, I am looking for stout forked branches where I can rest the floppy canes in a V shaped stick of seasoned wood. Obviously, this would look a bit duff in a very neat or formal garden but in my jungly chaos, it works a treat.

Yesterday I put a cage around YL, but today I decided it was not going to help enough. I had let the stems lie lax too long and felt they were hardening in a sideways or downward direction. I think staking would have been better but I would've needed 8 or 10 stakes. Too much! So, contrarily, I pruned YL back to where the branches seemed firm and weren't growing sideways too much. Yes it was very difficult to let the flowers go, but OTOH, I couldn't stand the awful way this rose was growing. Hopefully the next flush will be on stronger stems; if not I'll have to try staking after all.
