Poppy Lauren's Grape

'Lauren's Grape' papaver somniferum ws '08 bloom '08

Love these dark purple poppies which bloomed all summer until frost both planted in garden beds and in containers. Foliage can get a bit raggedy at the bottom so plant something in front to cover it. I did not know it would continue to bloom so planted it with the idea I would pull it out before anything else in that area would bloom.

I just love looking at all of your pictures! Thanks for posting. What kinds of containers did you use to wintersow the poppies? I direct sowed some and planted others in pop bottles. Just wondering how yours were started. Gorgeous - please keep em coming. Newbie Nik

Thanks, Nik. I have used both gal and 1/2 gal milk jugs for poppies. Also sowed in a large pot with a cut off milk jug top to cover the area of the pot with the poppy seeds. Your 2Ls should work also.

Direct sowing does not work well for me though this past spring I direct sowed some poppy seeds and then put cut off 2L's over them and had good germination. Will do that again.

Ive done Delphs 2-3 times, and they always germinate for me very well, I always figure you cant have enough of them =). Ive done Joe Pye weed in my last house as well, though it never bloomed before I moved, it seems to take 3 years here to do that. Ive tried hostas 3 or 4 times in the last 5 years and have had no germination, is it becuase of the poeple who gave them to me? The method? It seems other wintersowers have had a great deal of success doing them, not me, not yet. Ive tried them early and Ive tried them later. Im going back to early and seeing what happens. Silver Dollar is the same as money plant, a very eary biennal, I have sowed them before, but gave them to my Mother, becuase she loves the early spring fragrance. She gave me some seeds back to do them here. Shes very skeptical on wintersowing still! Lol, yet every year I give her more and more to plant from it. She has Dianthus, silver dollar, rudbeckia, russian sage, mondara all from wintersowing. Silverkelt

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your macro pictures! I'm going to take some myself. Yours are the best macros I've seen so far (but, this is just my first year doing this!)!! I'm certainly not an expert, and don't be surprised if I'm corrected by somebody else, but it looks like portulaca to me. The stems are reddish (check) and the leaves are pointed (check). If it's not portulaca, it certainly has similar characteristics. Don't count it for a weed yet! Wait on the experiences folks to chime in!

Looking good Vera!! You mention the snapdragons... I sowed more but yesterday I went to clean out one of the flower beds and pulled an old Snap out of the ground. Lots of resistance and when I had the roots I noticed they were still nice and plump. I'm leaving the others in to see if anything will come of them. Just trimming the tops today. We'll see. I have no sprouts of the Nicotiana. Always thought they sprouted early, but your experience shows me that's not true, so I'll wait a bit more. Turnip... We grew some last year as they are a favourite of DD's, but when we pulled them from the ground they had little holes made by insects in them. Yuck! Any idea? Couldn't eat them.

Mnwsgal, did you save seeds from yours and if so did they come true??

I know this is an old post but I was just curious, as I know your still an active member.

The seeds I saved in 2008 & 2009 did come true. I didn't save any seeds this year as had many self sown LG poppies in pots this spring so sprinkled seeds in the same pots.

I'm going to be sowing some of these this year, it's good to know they bloom throughout the summer. Does deadheading help?

Yes, I think deadheading helped. Bottom foliage can get a bit dried up.
