Good idea, Ingrid. I once had all my roses listed but when GW changed hands, the list was lost in cyberspace. I now keep an up-to-date list on HelpMeFind as Barking Dogs Garden.

After reading your post, I checked my page on GW and couldn't see anywhere that a rose list would fit. I don't have seeds or plants to trade generally; if I need something or somebody else needs something I have, we contact each other individually.

My roses are in Anita's Garden on HMF. The Sacramento Historic Rose Garden roses are listed, too.

Thanks, Ingrid, I forgot about the GW member page. I have my list on HMF, and often refer to the Gardens tab to see where a rose is being grown, but I never think of my page on GW. I'll have to go look at it and see what's there.

This is an issue I've thought about quite a bit.

I used to have a long chatty descriptive paragraph on my member page, and for a while a list of roses, too. But my rose list kept changing and I got tired of constantly updating it. As time went on my chatty paragraph shrank a bit, too. I do really like it when people post a brief bio. It doesn't need to reveal personal information -- and indeed perhaps it should not -- but it is useful to get a sense of the person whose thoughts you are reading. I frequently click on the sender's name when reading a post that interest me when that post is made by someone I have not actually met. When I read a few words about them I think "Oh yes, now I know who this is". When there is nothing there but a blank, I shrug but feel a sense of disappointment. The poster remains a stranger to me. The whole sense of having an actual conversation is lost.

For an example of the kind of paragraph I'm describing, I'll post my own here:

I grow old and old-fashioned roses mixed with herbs, perennials, vegetables, and trees in the foothills overlooking the Valley of Heart's Delight, a place some call Silicon Valley. Lately IÂve been planting fruit trees, shrubs, grapes, and open-pollinated vegetables to develop a garden that is as bountiful as it is beautiful. My garden surrounds a house filled with books. A fence around the garden keeps the abundant wildlife out and the dog in. Once upon a time (one of my favorite phrases in the English language) I was known on these forums as Paula_sfbay.

My list is on HMF, but also I have it listed on the GW exchange page for GW members to see... I rarely do exchanges, but it's a good page for odd information... I just ignore the paragraph headers.

seattlesuze, the rose list goes in the same area as your description of yourself, such as the one that rosefolly wrote. Just add another paragraph and start your list.

To make paragraphs, type in the less than sign , but all together without spaces and that will create the paragraphs.

I so agree that a description of yourself, especially where and how you garden, is a great thing to have as an introduction so that people can come to know a little bit about you.

Thank you, Ingrid. My list is up. The description may need some tweaking, but I think it makes it clear that I'm wierd. Not really, I guess. Just goofy. Should I be more serious about this?

Sherry, I see nothing goofy about your description, it's very nice and your rose list is awesome. We have some of the same roses and you have many that I'd like to have. It's going to be such fun to see your garden grown and flourish as time goes on. I'm so glad you posted your list. I hope we'll have lots more people doing the same.

I think HMF is infinitely more useful and efficient for keeping rose lists, but I see Rosefolly's point. I will add a description to my GW member page and my rose list will remain on HMF. I have the same member name there.

Ingrid, thanks for bringing up this topic.

I totally agree with you, that it would be very good, if more people would create a member page. It is very nice to know a little bit about the person you are communicating with and also, of course, what roses they are growing.

For the ones that have many roses and have their lists on HMF, maybe these people can inform others GardenWebers here on their GardenWeb member page, that their rose list is on HMF. They could also put the name, that they use on HMF here on their GardenWeb member page so that, their rose list is easy to find on HMF for anyone, who is interested in it.

Ingrid, I like how you are grouping your roses into classes on your member page, that is very reader friendly. Maybe I will copy this idea from you!
I also just learned from you in this thread how to make a paragraph on the member page. I edited my member page already and it worked, yay! Now I would like to know, how I can just simply start a new line after I have made a comma (for example):

Rose de Rescht,
Iceberg,
etc.

Besides starting a new paragraph I was not able to do that either. Could you or anyone else help me out with that?

Diane, if at all possible, put your roses on HMF. As the old rose nurseries disappear, it's more and more important to see who is growing what.

HMF will produce lists by class.

Anita, you have a very valid point I hadn't considered before. If God forbid no old roses could be bought we would be a resource for each other to have them in our gardens and to preserve them for posterity.

I plan on listing my roses both on my page on this forum and also HMF at Anita's suggestion as soon as I find some time.

Meanwhile let's continue to support the nurseries like Vintage that we still have so we'll continue to have access to the old beauties.

Diane, I think it's great, that you want to put your rose list on HMF and on GardenWeb. That is obviously the best, but I can understand that it is too much hassle to do and keep it updated for a some people with really a lot of roses.
