Transmission, clutch or????? Slipping

I have a 2007 46 inch cut YardMan tractor, non-hydrostatic drive and 7 on the fly speeds. Recently it's become a dangerous machine. When going down a slight hill I push the left side pedal in to feather the brake/clutch but about halfway through the range it releases and acts like it goes into nuetral and basically freefalls until I push the pedal all the way then the wheels lock up and tires squeal. I cleaned and adjusted the brake so I know that's not the problem. Is it a belt issue or something internal in the transmission?

sounds like the brake is misadjusted. it should ease on gradually, not just all of a sudden go from no brake to full brake.

it could be the belt, does the machine have a problem pulling itself UP the hill? if the belt were slipping i would think it would give issues going up as well.

By depressing the clutch, you basically are putting it into neutral. What you should do is only slightly depress the pedal so you can slip the shifter into a lower gear and let the drive train hold you back. Better yet, approach the slope in the lower gear to start with. My guess is if the brakes locked and the tires squeeled, the slope may be too severe for the machine.

Many times it is just a belt issue. You can try unhooking the cable spring where it attaches to the bail and either crimp a tiny flat washer or zip tie to see if the cable adjustment would help. Certain models had an adjustable control and cable available.

I have had the machine in this postion before. I have Jonny Bucket and if I am pushing into something that stops the machine the front wheels sometimes spin, but the backs never do. The whine from the hydro gets louder which I assume is the bypass opening, and the engine does not bog down at all...not even a little bit. I do not see how a hydro could stall the engine anyway...seems to me that as the engine speed droped so would the speed of the hydro pump and thus the pressure inside the pump. I would think that the entire system would reach some point of eqlibrium where the engine slowed down due to the hydro pressure but as that happened the pressure inside the hydro woulkd also drop easing the load on teh engine. Does that make any sense???? Now I've confused myself...damn!

We may need some more details such as tachometer readings, codes(if any),ATF level and quality, but this sounds just like normal downshifting upon accelerating.

Of course check the fluid in the master cylinder reservior, pump the clutch pedal a few times and see if it goes into gear any better. The free play is when you push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, put it in gear, start to release the pedal and if the pedal has to travel quite a distance to make the truck move then the clutch is getting thin, and visa versa, if you have to push it in only a little to get the clutch to stop driving the truck then it is getting thin. What this looks like is all the work is getting done at the upper pedal travel equals thin clutch. Pumping the pedal makes things easier equals hydraulic malfunction, time to do some easy rebuilding.

Slope has never been a problem in the past. This is a new issue that has just started. I don't think the belts slipping when going up the hill and I looked at the belt and it's not glazed or anything. It's just flat out scary. You start pressing the pedal and it slows then it gets to a spot as you are about halfway through the pedal stroke and it lets loose like the machine has no brakes and it's in neutral then if you finish the pedal stroke and push it all the way everything locks and the tires squeal to a halt.

i just checked and if i push part way i get brake, further is clutch, all teh way is parking brake. at least that is the way it is on both the Craftsman Gt and the Murray i have.

followup....

Put two new drive belts on, took the rear transaxle apart to see if there were any broken gears. Gears and everything looked good. Put everything back together and tried it out. Went up a paved road with about a 15 degree hill. I had it one speed one, no foot on the pedal and could smell something that smelled like a clutch burning. got to the top of the hill and on the way down had it on speed one. Got about 1/3rd the way down and lightly touched the pedal. It started to slip once again into what "feels" like neutral then as I continue to push the pedal I stopped but not until it was all the way pushed. When I let the pedal out it wouldn't move. I had to play with the forward/reverse to get it to move and after a few feet it started to slow again. had to play around like this until I got on flat ground then it seemed to work fine yet again. Getting frustrated. So I have new belts, all springs intact, brake cleaned, no gears broke in the transaxle. Could this be a transmission problem?
