Its a rampant grower and does have some blackspot suceptibility in the fall. Tends to cover itself in blooms but only once a year unfortunately. A better choice is a reliable plant of New Dawn which is the repeat blooming sport of Dr. Nicolas but be sure of the source.

Thank you much for sharing your knowledge of this rose. That's enough for me to know it won't work in the situation where I'd want to grow it (a situation that requires a lax, not highly vigorous, preferably pink, remontant climber).

york rose, I have what was once a bodybag rose, Coral Dawn, which was mistakenly labelled as New Dawn. The flowers are lovely and delicate, and have a soft fragrance. It is sort of spindly, but is real pretty when tied up and blooming. I believe it would perform better if I had started with a healthy plant. It SURELY doesn't live up to its relatives reputation of being a monster. It has not been a superior rebloomer, but it does stay pretty dang healthy in my no- or little-spray garden. Like I said, it did not start it's life in my home under the best of circumstances. :o(

You might consider it. It could be just what you are looking for. You can thank me later for speaking for you, lol!

In the situation where it would grow it would be under very heavy blackspot pressure. What I read at HelpMeFind suggests Coral Dawn is blackspot susceptible.

Otherwise the flowers are lovely!

york_rose, bummer! :o( Mine does alright here...but I understand BS pressure is much higher out there. I guess I have that to be thankful for.

I added Dr. Nicolas to the garden two years ago, own-root plant from Vintage I believe. The flowers are beautiful and full and a delicious shade of pink ... the plant itself was the victim of a particularly vicious rabbit attack, and it spent the summer trying to recover. I ordered a budded Dr. Nicolas from Pickering last fall, in case I have to replace my original plant. The original plant seems to be doing well, and the new plant is in a pot right now. We'll see how things go over the summer.

Dr. Nicolas isn't particularly BS resistant, but it's not a disease-ridden eye sore either.

Last year, an older woman visiting the garden told me that her mother grew Dr. Nicolas and she was thrilled to see it in my garden.

It would be nice if we could delete the above posts which make reference to 'Dr. W. Van Fleet' (the sport parent of New Dawn, and a very nice rose in its own right) so we don't completely confuse new-comers. Since we can't, I'll just repeat the fact that Dr. Nicolas is not related to New Dawn and the two roses are not at all similar.
