id young maple tree please

Can someone please identify what maple tree this is? Current height is 18 inches. It's single trunk and grows straight nicely. Thanks.

Hard to say as the leaves are so small, but if I had to choose, I would say a red leaved Norway Maple.

I wish it stays red. I've been wanting a red leaved maple tree. My 5 year old, 13 ft tall maple tree in front yard has color red leaves right now but the leaves are smaller than the picture above. Also, leaves will turn green when it becomes bigger. The color red is also like orange red.

The tree picture I posted above is from my backyard. There is an Autumn Blaze maple tree about 30 ft. However, the leaves aren't that red as well.

I'll post another picture after a month.

Ask the Tree forum. They'll know. (The maple forum is not as active; you'll get more responses on the Tree forum.) If it's a Freeman, it's a seedling, so not identical to its hybrid parent, so there's no guarantee exactly what you'll get. But you definitely don't want it if it's more like the silver maple ancestor (aggressive ground level roots; constantly shedding small branches; not much in the way of fall color; I still have three around the house). I'd worry about whether the multiple trunks would be more likely to split. Was it cut off at the ground, then developed the multiple trunks? I don't really know, though -- but do ask someone. I know how tempting it is to keep a seedling that comes up in a likely place; I had a leaning black locust cut down last year on the edge of the creek. I was thinking about what to plant to replace it, but there's a 6' volunteer maple (Carolina red maple?) 10-15' to one side and an 18" white pine about 10-15' to the other side. So I'm encouraging them; we'll see.... Are there maples in the area that you admire? Does anyone have a good-sized, fall-red Japanese maple? You can always collect samaras this spring and grow one in the ideal location.

I'm leaning towards the suggested pathogenic problem (Verticillium wilt, Armillaria rot, etc). These problems can show similar early symptoms on young trees. Since you have it out, take the tree to the local Ag extension agency for an analysis (they should be glad to help you). In the meantime, go to the local boxstore and purchase a cheap pH test kit to check the pH level of the soil within the planting area. Autumn Blaze can be a little susceptible to alkaline soils (pH 7.5 and higher) even though some say not. The leaves look a little chlorotic. Do not replant with another maple cultivar until all of your test results come back for proper problem identification. As a side: that looks like a man-hole cover in the sidewalk behind the trees in your pic, did you plant the trees on city property? and also are there any utilities in this region (burried and/or above)?

Agree^....and agree it's a great plant, much superior-in my book-to most of the cultivars. Straight species Thuja occidentalis is already a dense plant. But in making the selections for all the cultivars that are out there, plants people seemed to always select those that grew even more slowly and thus have even tighter structure. I prefer this somewhat rangier look, where you can still see the tiered branch arrangement. That's how they all look in my woods, full of species T. o.

Looks like Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum), or maybe Freeman's Maple (Acer x fremanii).

While I can certainly not out of the relm of possible, I have not seen a Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum), or Freeman's Maple (Acer x fremanii anywhere near that dark on immature leaves. Which is why I believe a Red Leaf Norway (Acer platanoides) is more likely, as they can in fact be that color on immature leaves. Also note how dark the stem is in the background. However if by chance it is not a Acer platanoides, then it may have traits that are of interest to the nursery trade.

Leaf shape is quite wrong for platanoides. I'm *VERY* sure its not platanoides. saccharinum or fremanii, bet ya $20 ;)

No bet from me, I'm too likely to be wrong, and I don't like anything but sure bets. ;-) BTW, I agree the leaf shape looks more like saccharium, but the color really bothers me, so I went with what I felt was the next most likely. Also the OP talked about "single trunk and grows straight nicely" which is often not the case with saccharium even at an early age, or at least that's the case here. Guess we will have a better ideal with later pictures.

The downy young leaves and leaf petioles excludes any possibility of Norway, Silver, or Red Maples, they're all glabrous (hairless).

Agree that identification needs more photos after the leaves have fully expanded.

Norways have milky sap, an easy way to differentiate them from silver maples.
