lily of the valley
Comments (4)Most of the time lily of the valley do not do well in California unless you have dense shade in the garden. I mean dense! I tried for years to grow them, but like most bulbs or pips they like a nice cold winter. However, you can get them to grow a bit if you have the dark shade and moisture. Put them under a shrub or small tree deeply under the canopy. You will see some blossoms, but do not expect a carpet of them; it is hard to have them here unless you live in snow country....See MoreLily of the valley in LA?
Comments (3)Well, I'm technically 9b or sunset zone 14, which is probably colder than you, and while I can keep them alive, they don't form the thick groundcover that they do back east. They just randomly pop up, here and there. Here's the thickest patch in my garden for you to evaluate. And this is a patch several years old that gets abundant water via irrigation....See MoreLily of the valley pips not gorwing
Comments (4)First off, Lily of the Valley is not a true Lily. You might want to try and ask the Perennials forum for some advice as well. Convallaria majalis (it's botanical name) has yet to emerge in our gardens here in the Pacific Northwest, but it should start coming up fairly soon since it sounds like you've done everything prescribed. Just make sure the soil is moist. I'm not sure if Convallaria really thrives down in the south. I've always associated it growing in cool Northern climates. But as long as it has shade and moist organic soil, it should take off. New plantings often take a while to establish, but if you got fresh live plant material, they should poke their lil' heads up pretty soon! Best of luck, Riz...See MoreLily of the Valleys dead or no?
Comments (11)I'm gonna assume you are new to gardening cuz any plant other than annuals typically take several seasons to establish and the larger the plant, the longer it takes. And by 'establish' I mean fully settled in, adequate root development and beginning the tendency to spread. Planted now, you will have growth and most likely flowers next spring but that's a long way from established. And many plants have 'lily' in the common name that have nothing to do with lilies. Common names are just made up names or plant nicknames if you will and have nothing at all to do with the actual botanical classification. There are very likely more non-lily plants with 'lily' in the common name than there are true lilies :-)) Here's just a few: Torch lily - Kniphofia Foxtail lily - Eremerus Peruvian or princess lily - Alstroemeria Calla lily - Zantadeschia Toad lily - Tricyrtis Blackberry lily - Belamcanda Voodoo lily - Dracunculus or Armorphophallus Day lily - Hemerocallis Water lily - Nymphaea Lily turf - Liriope Pineapple lily - Eucomis Plantain lily - Hosta Lily of the Valley - Convallaria...See MoreMickie Marquis
