Clay Soil, add logs when planting?

I read in a tree book, a person said they "plant large logs in the soil near new trees, providing avenues for roots to move around through dense clay."

I'm trying to visualize this. Large logs near the roots, going out, like a wagon wheel?

What do you think about placing just a few pieces of good sized decomposing wood in the hole when planting in clay?

Help or hinder?
