Another stupid newbie question.

I have a question about the roses I just planted. I posted a little while ago about the one's I bought.. don't know if y'all remember but out of all the one's I bought two of them seem to suffer in direct noon-time sun. I noticed that the flower buds wilt when in direct sun even when they were still in the pots but as soon as they were moved into shade they perked back up again. We planted them last night and today I noticed that they were badly wilted again.. the same way.. only the flower buds were wilted.. the leaves were fine. I am wondering if the combination of the plants being rootbound in the pot, producing so many buds with a small root ball and then the stress of transplanting is causing the flower buds to wilt? I'm also wondering if these particular roses aren't full sun and might need to be in the shade? I sure hope not because I really don't want to have to dig them outta where they are!! Guess I should say which roses I'm talking about... Burgundy Iceberg. Says on the tag that they're full sun.. but I'm doubting that.

Any advice?

Provide lots of water and water deeply. Place a lawn chair near it to shade it from the noonday sun until it gets established. It should be fine once the roots grow into the surrounding soil. If you move it to the shade permanently, you'll be sorry later.

Thanks for the advice... I was hoping that it would be fine once it got settled into it's new home. I don't have any lawn chairs but I do have a way to provide shade from the hot sun.

Do you think I should cut off all the large flower buds to take that stress away? I'm sure that the flower buds take a lot of energy from the plant... at this time it needs all it's energy for making more roots.. not flowers. I already pruned off about half the larges buds and it seems to have perked up again but that was after it was already past sunset... I'll know tomorrow if it helped at all. I watered all the roses we transplanted very deeply yesterday and then again today and will keep watering them daily for another week. I hope that will help them get over the stresses.

Okay, thanks much for the info. On the tweezers, I was actually asking about whether I needed to remove the earwigs which seem to have taken up residence in the "tillers/ears". :-) Wasn't sure if they were just hanging out or if they might do damage to any developing ears/silks. I know 12 stalks is a pretty small planting, but I was limited for this year by garden space, plus it's just hubby and I, so I didn't need much. I figured 12 should give me around 12-15 ears (hopefully, anyway), and that would be enough for the 2 of us. I'll keep an eye out for silks in the new growths. And fortunately, if the tassels on the tallest stalks are spent by then, it seems that 3 of the first-planted stalks are a bit ahead of the other 3, so maybe I can hand-pollinate using the neighboring stalks' tassels. Thanks again! I had done searches and just wasn't finding the specific information I sought... so I really appreciate your reply. Happy gardening!

I'll add another possibility. My Calvert (not a weeper) has done this a couple of years now. The problem is that I had it too wet (I believe) and the growth was long, thin and weak. Does your plant show a lot of signs of mosaic stress as well? Water availability seems to be indicated by the distance between growth nodes on fig branches (at least that's what I'm going on) and thin nodeless branches are more likely to act as you've described than thicker, noded branches. Try potting in a more airy planting mix next year and trim off most (or all if you're brave) of the thin weak growth. Leave at least 1/4th of the current growth points as you do this (and choose strong buds or ones closest to the main stem). My Calvert is doing better this year (after doing much of what I described above) but I plan on cutting off the rest of the weak growth before new growth next year. ~Chills

There was certainly nothing stupid about that question! Welcome, Maryl. You have to go over to the Gallery section and look at some of the awesome collections folks have posted there. A few internet sellers have great Sansevierias, but for the most part, there is no combined, concerted effort to market or appreciate these plants. You sorta fall into love with them the more you see the different varieties. Then you seek out sources for your 'addiction'. I found a great source in my local Cactus & Succulent Society. Which is where I buy most of mine. I started with a pup off of my grandmothers plant, and now I have sixteen different varieties. Nearly all of them are easy growers, the hahnii varieties being a bit trickier. You can see a great photo of a S. hahnii in the upper corner of the start page. These are also known as 'birdnest' types. They are smaller in stature and more sensitive to water than many other varieties. You can go to your local library and request they bring in a copy of B. Juan Chahanian's "The Sansevieria Trifasciata Varieties". Great color pictures. There is another wonderful book by Hermoine Stover, can't remember the name, nor do I own it. Its been out of print for awhile. Found a copy in my local C&S library and enjoyed checking it out for a month. I'm not sure if libraries do that anymore, but when I was a young girl in a small town, I could request that our local library bring in from bigger libraries, copies of books I wished to read. As long as I had the author and title, pretty soon a copy would be there for me to check out. Our discussion pages go back for 10 pages, with 30 posts per page. You can read all about questions, issues, and progress reports as well as see all the photos we've taken in the last year on the Gallery pages. This forum runs a little slow compared to other GW forums, but there are some awesomely knowlegeable people who stop in here. Welcome, make yourself at home, pull up a chair an pour a cuppa.

I agree, provide some shade and plenty of water.

Also, if you can find a root stimulator WITHOUT fertilizer added, that can be helpful. I use one from HI-YIELD that is vitamin B based. I don't know the exact name of it, as it is out in the shed and it's really cold and crappy out today and I plan on doing alot of armchair gardening today. :)

I'd remove the buds--leave one if you haven't seen the flower yet. Water moderately every day until it perks up.

Hi mystic dragon,

I agree with the above comments. I have had the same problem with newly planted roses. What I do is put a cheese cloth shield over them for typically the first week or two. This helps diffuse the direct sun. I also give them 1/2 gallon of water in the morning and another in the late afternoon. I do this until they stop wilting in the sun.

I also would remove the buds and blooms, as you want the plant's energy to be directed to establishing new roots.

Personally, I don't let my new roses bloom for the first year (two if it is an own-root). I know most people don't do this as it interferes with our desire for beautiful roses asap. I will let 1 or 2 buds bloom to help offset this :) But . . . since I get very upset if I lose a rose and I want them for a good long time, I'm willing to wait the extra time. Just my preference.

P.S. Your roses were in a pot when you bought them yes?? vs in a box. I ask because your posting says "newbie" and there was a period when the instructions on the box said that you could just plant the rose, box and all, and the box would decompose in the soil. And it will . . . 10 years after your rose is DEAD!! Don't know if those instructions are still there or not as I mainly order my roses or buy pre-potted ones. Just wanted to mention it just in case.

Melania brings up a very good point about those "plant in the box" roses. Don't do it! Make sure the rose is completely out of the pot before planting.

Sadly, they *still* sell roses in that absurd fashion; I saw a bunch of them like that in a big-box store this spring. It is basically a death sentence for the rose in question if it is planted in the box.

Another stupid newbie question.
