trees suggestions for north side of house (side yard)

We have a side yard - only about 5 feet wide - that we'd like to plant some sort of tree or shrub along. The main purposes would be to see something green outside the window and have some privacy. There is already a wall and we are only a one story house, so privacy isn't a huge issue. Anyway, that area will be shaded pretty much the whole day. We live in Southern California - about 1 mile from the beach - and are just wondering what might be a good fit. We had ficuses before (previous owners put them in)but we were paranoid about the roots, so we tore them out when we remodeled. I really like the pittosporum tenuifolium that I see around here, but I read they are sun to part shade...does anyone have a guess about whether or not those might work or if we should think about something else? Thanks.
