The other fern post is way down there, so hope no-one minds me starting a new thread...if you do oh well...

Finally got around to snapping some fern pics.

Here are the Dryopteris (Autumn fern) showing their spring color. As the season progresses, they will change to a rich green with a leathery texture, and will lose the vase shape. Love, love, LOVE these ferns!

Same grouping, from the other side of the bed:

Japanese painted ferns. Like I said, you've got to plant them in the front, then they really stand out:

"Lady in Red" lady ferns. Unfortunately you can't see the red stems very well here.

I love the painted ferns! I had one I ordered from Spring Hill Nursery and it never really took off... just sprouted a little and died. Hopefully the replacement comes soon!

The Autumn Ferns are really nice. I love the shape and color. Would these do OK in a sunnier area as long as they have water?

I can't tell what it is, if it's clear then it's not mealies. But the stuff on the plant looks white, so maybe a better pic would help. I don't think mealies are that bad, actually. While I don't like chemicals, there are systemics that will clear them up fairly quickly. I don't see them very often and I stay on top of that kind of thing. I'll sometimes unpot a plant and spray the whole thing, roots and all, with a fine, hard spray from the garden hose. Have to be sure to get down in the space where the petiole attaches to the stem. But that usually does the trick.

Your setup and your plants look pretty good. Just wait till they get a little bigger, they will start growing like CRAZY! . If you let us know what kind of lights you are using and exactly how close they are since it's hard to tell for sure in a picture we could probably better tell you if they are at a good distance. I also wouldn't worry too much about the lack of room, I've grown much bigger plants in about the same amount of space. As long as you keep the leaves pruned back so they are not fighting each other for light if they happen to get too much bigger while they are still in the tent I think your grow space should be just fine for a little while.

Welcome to the forum! You have some beautiful Hoyas! I think I need to go to San Diego because I can NEVER find all the varieties (you have) of hoyas here in Raleigh. I have heard of a gazillion nurseries that offer Orchids and tropical plants in Apopka, FL which is closer to me. lol Anyway, I rely on eBay a lot and some great growers on this forum that sell cuttings or rooted cuttings also on eBay. Some of the common Hoyas I have been able to find at Lowes or Home Depot. Im sure you already discovered how addictive they can be :-) I consider myself to still be a newbie by finding this forum and many more Hoyas (than just Carnosa) about a year and half ago. The people here are so helpful and wonderful! It's really a great community of Hoya lovers. We'll need to start a forum called 'Hoya Anonymous' or 'Planning an intervention for your Hoya lover' ! Hah!!

Blue: Looking very good. Your banana should be fine. Laurie: Yours is a perfectly sane idea. Garbage cans will definitely work. Heavier duty ones will be better in the long run. In our parts various kinds of plastic 55 gallon barrels are available at around $15-20. This is is the one I use to collect rainwater. Olives are shipped from Greece in these and I can get them at local flea market. Search barrels or rain barrels on craigslist, and inquire at local bakeries, breweries, food processing centers, et. The other available sizes I have seen/used are 15 and 35 gallons. In old days, before rainwater collecting became popular, they used to give it away for free. These are tough barrels. But there are other types too and you can make any of them work. I would look for food grade barrels as the other ones you never know what kind of chemicals were transported in them. Food grade barrels are the ones that exclusively used to transport food/juice etc. Once it has any other substance it loses its food grade status. Otherwise there is no difference in the plastic material, generally speaking. There are a few ways of diverting downspout water, managing overflow and stringing more than barrels together. Youtube has some good videos. If you need more details let me know and I will describe my setup. If you are worried about pollution/bird poop runoff from roof look into "first flow diverter". It is a clever way to reject the first few gallons of rainwater that contains most of the unwanted stuff. I do not have it in my system. The water should remain very clear for months easily as long they are not exposed to direct sunlight. Light encourages algae growth. I am always astonished how crystal clear it remains through the winter and smells fresh.

And yet I have the opposite. I have some JPF planted several years ago positioned way, way at the back. And there is no doubt it is only I who know they are there! I guess given my limited space I am not yet horticulturally mature enough to give away the front of the garden to non flowering perennials.

But now that I think of it I have a new shade garden that for sure I could include some of the JPF in a more up front location. How did I miss that?

Ken -- the project is in the design stage, I'm supposed to review the design this week with the company, scheduled to get done this summer. I am NOT happy about having to spend the $$$ but no doubt it will look fantastic when it's done. Thanks for asking :0)

Kevin -- I think the autumn ferns would do fine in a part-sun location. I probably wouldn't plant them in full sun, though.

I agree - autumn ferns are wonderful plants! so are JPFs...

Have you tried 'Ghost' ferns? They are nice.

I planted some Branford Beauty ferns in 2011 - they look to have promise of good silvery interest but are still very small so I have my fingers crossed that they will bulk up nicely sometime soon!

Because of your thread I went out and bought two JPF and planted them at opposite ends of a shady front border! The specific variety is "Burgundy Lace".

Are you familiar with BL?

I was just out in the backyard with the camera and thought of this thread when I passed my favorite ferns. I couldn't tell you what the green one on the left is :-) but the silvery one on the right is a 'Ghost' fern - that one is definitely worth adding!

I LOVE Athyrium 'Ghost'. Truly one of my favorites, and it has the size and presence to really light up a shaded area. Once it really settles in it just gets better and better each year. One of my friends has had a clump in his garden since 2004. For the past several years, it has been a showstopper. I can't wait till my own plants grow up.

I have been curious about 'Branford Beauty'. Anyone know how it differs from 'Ghost'? The descriptions sound very similar if not identical.

I have also noticed one called 'Ocean's Fury' in catalogues. It seems to be like a crested version of 'Ghost'.

I just ordered a few northern maidenhairs, Adiantum pedatum, to add to my shade bed. These seem to be hardier than I thought as long as they stay moist. I expect great things to come in a few years! :-)

I planted a couple of Branford Beauty a year or two ago. They are very small still; at this point they have more of the low/wide look of a JPF, so I'm not sure yet hom they'll look longterm.
