That would be a "banhisassfromtheforum" japanese maple.

It is beautiful. It also looks like it is pretty close to the house. If it has the typical spreading habit of most jm's, I would move it out quite a few feet.

I am going to echo what carrieb said. That is REALLY close to the house for a 20' JM that will spread. I would definitely move it further out.

There is a Maple Forum, which has mostly fanciers of JMs on it. You could post over there and I am sure one of them will know. Judging from posts I looked at a while ago, some of the members seem to have memorized the leaves, colors, shapes and names of hundreds of JMs.

It looks like Japanese Maple or Acer palmatum. Did the nursery tell you that it was a grafted selection? If not, it is a seedling, just like hundreds of thousands of seedlings sold every year. They can easily reach 20' height X 20' width, usually they have outstanding fall color.

Thank You all for replying. I finally got in touch with the lady at the nursery and was told it was acer palmatum. She also told me that it would grow to be about 20 feet and has beautiful fall foliage. I also will be moving it within the next year, Iam currently building a new home, and it will be put at my new home then, but I just had to put it in the ground because it was such a nice tree. I do have another question though, Where can I find a laceleaf Jap. Maple ( Variety Crimson Queen) that is a large speciman. Would be willing to pay any amount for this tree. All the ones at the nursery are so little and I want something more mature. Victory Tea, apology accepted, I actually thought it was kind of funny.

I don't know where you are in terms of proximity to towns/cities, but a good nursery that has a wide range of plants should also have larger JMs. Around here, I can think of 4-6 nurseries off hand, in 3 different cities, that would have 3-6' weeping JMs - at a suitable price of course! I think the biggest one I saw a few weeks ago, which was gorgeous, was just under $1,000. Mostly, the smaller ones run from $150 to $600, depending on size, form, the rarity, and the nursery! If there is a particular nursery you have a relationship with, ask if they can find one - just give them a budget and size first.

There are also any number of back-yard growers, especially around Hendersonville and Asheville. I think I would call the local county extension agent - s/he oversees the local Master Gardeners group - around here anyway - and the one here keeps track of nurseries of interest.

Wherever you find it, you will probably have to pick it up yourself, or PAY to have it delivered, depending on distance. Don't forget that JMs are very sensitive to wind, so wrap it well in a tarp so it doesn't get burned if it will be in the back of an open truck. And don't even bother to bring it home until you are ready to plant it, after you have moved in and any workmen have moved out - you KNOW it will be the one tree a contractor's truck will back into!

Acer palmatum is the species - there may be a specific cultivar name for your variety, which is why I suggested posting on the Maple Forum.

Just one more quick planting note. It looks like your tree may be planted too deep. It is hard to tell from a photo, so I'm not certain. The root flare should be visible. If it is planted too deep, it could very well kill the tree. If it is planted too deep, and the current location is a very temporary one, you could just remove some of the soil from the top inch or two around the root ball until you transplant it.
