Do you dream of gardens?

I have had a recurring dream for decades where I am in the most fantastic garden of flowering trees. Every one different and each more lovely than the next.

When not bewitched by the floral displays, I spend my time there looking for seedpods and seedlings on the floor of that enchanted forest.

I more have nightmares where the plants I put together look terrible, silver maples choke the life out of everything for miles, and the weeds are higher than the roses.

Yes, but then I also have waitress dreams from my college days. Then there are the dead cats dreams. Go figure.

I've been gardening in this yard about 7 years, and it's about half way there. Unfortunately, I will probably leave this place before it's "finished" and looks like my dreams, but that's okay. The gardens would be more mature, if the yard hadn't been so neglected by the previous owner and heavily overgrown with invasive plants. It's taken 6 years so far to remove trees like big horrible Norway maples and invasive shrubs and vines, which has taken time away from gardening. I resent it but feel an obligation to remove as many of the invasives as possible before moving. At the next yard, I want a more open lot, with a few strategic canopy trees and established plantings and a big open full sun area. Then I can start gardens from scratch, grow a large vegetable garden, and make a ginormous sunny butterfly garden. :) In the meantime, there is beauty in every stage, and I've grown to appreciate the perennials and other plants that grow well in woodlands and partial sun. The birds and other critters love the habitat too.

To answer your question, the green wall on the left of the pic of my SG is a bunch of huge bushes and some volunteer trees, left over from a formal garden which was started in 1905 by my DH's great grandfather. However, I think you can certainly start a SG without inheriting it! A blooming vine which grows in shade and likes your climate (I use star jasmine here, but it is only hardy zones 8-10) would be perfect for that fence. Rhododendrons and hydrangeas like shade, too - and I know there are types of both which would be hardy in your zone (in fact, I had to search to find rhododendrons for my garden here which were heat hardy enough). You could plant a hedge of one or the other in front of that fence, with a flowering vine growing on the fence. You could even make the fence a little taller for the vine by adding one of those lattice things to the top of it - it is sold in lengths to be added to the top of fences - my DH increased the height of the neighbor's fence in our back yard by about 18 inches by adding that. I have a hedge of hydrangeas here in front of a tall fence with star jasmine growing on it - both types of flowers are white, which looks good in the shade, and it looks great. So, there are all kinds of possibilities, including of course planting rose in the sunny parts. Personally, I would not struggle to plant any roses in the shade, where even if they survived they would not be happy. Plants planted where they are happy will make you happier in the long run. I suggest you dig it up, cut it back,soak it for 30 minutes in a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part Clorox, and then replant it elsewhere. I'm afraid in zone 8 rust may be inevitable. The first plant I had that showed signs of rust was purchased from a well-known vendor in a area where there is no rust! I'm sure something else in my garden had it, but it wasn't visible enough to notice. Rust has been especially bad this fall in some areas of our property. So far, as I am weeding/grooming in our field bed, the only tetraploid that I've inspected up close has been Kent's Favorite Two ... and it was surrounded by rusty plants. Of course, the year-old diploid seedlings planted there are almost all without rust. Those few that do have it are not much affected by it. I even have rust on those that are listed as rust-free! I do have one long raised bed full of red dayliles, both tets and dips, that hasn't shown any sign of rust ever, plus about 14 diploids that are planted along the road 8' apart that have never had any rust, either. No dreams about hostas (yet)! However, Liberty is a "she" in my garden and Sagae is definitely a "he". While Empress Wu is a "she" some hostas like "Moonstruck" are gender neutral!

Paula, I CAN SYMPATHIZE: I dream about working as a teenager in my father's pharmacy. Also school dreams, both as teacher and as student.
I have recurrent dreams of both anxious and optimistic sorts. No garden dreams per se, but dreams about discovering that my house has more rooms or space than I realized, or that I own houses that I didn't know about. Dreams with spring water--blue water--are good dreams. I've gone through periods of dreaming a lot about my home state of Florida.
thonotorose: your dream sounds like a marvelous one. Did it come along at the same time as your gardening activities?

Last week I had to meet a client at a nursery at 10:00. The night before I dreamed I was running late--the clock on the dashboard said it was 9:56--and I got to an intersection and couldn't remember what town I was in, so I didn't know which way to turn. I'm not sure whether it's a comment on the number of places I've lived or the homogenity of America.
Otherwise, I don't dream of gardens. It's the one place in my life where there are no issues.

What a coincidence! DH said this morning he had a dream last night about the rose that's outside our kitchen window (Maman Cochet, Cl). In his dream it had a huge flower on it - maybe 6" - that was red, white & blue with a flag in it. He almost woke me up. (I think he's impressed with that rose, too.)

I wish I dreamed about gardens. Most of my dreams are either nightmares or frustrating types. If my dreams reflect my mental condition I'm in trouble. :D

what a lovely dream. I did a quick lookup on the dream symbols and trees seem to refer to your "family" tree with some mention of reproductive system, hmmm, you were picking up seeds too.

I love dreaming and miss the childhood days of daydreaming, such a creative time. It would be nice to return to that.

My garden dreams are waking ones, while looking at pictures of gorgeous rose gardens and wanting to make one of my own, something BIG and public with columns and arches and arbors, well you get the idea.

Wish I lived near those great CA rose gardens. I'd settle for working in one.

Yes I dream of gardens. Every winter I start dreaming about roses. I can even smell them. I don't know how many times I've woken up smelling banana shrubs (Michelia figo).
I've dreamed that I was in Pam's garden up in Mendocino lots of times. It's so heavenly up there that it's no wonder that my subconcious keeps trying to pull me back!
My garden dreams didn't start until I first started gardening around 7 years ago.

Melissa, I have the dreams about houses, too! Both about more rooms and about different houses that I had "forgotten" that I had. Isn't that funny? I never would have imagined that anyone else dreamed that. It was especially bad in college, I would dream that the small apartment had all kinds of extra rooms, if only I could find them cause they were hidden.

Most of my dreams are good ones. Guess I'm lucky in that respect. But the rare bad one is awfull.

It's very unusual for a recurring dream to be a pleasant one (I'm a Certified Dream Worker). If it were my dream (and I have been having a lot of dreams about gardens and flowers lately) it would be about trying to find Beauty and Meaning in my life, perhaps through my family (trees) and/or my children (seeds), or wishing that I had had children, feeling that they would have added Beauty and Meaning to my life. That it recurrs says to me that there is something that I need to change that has not changed since the last time I had the dream. But if it does change slightly, then it would mean to me that I am working on it, making progress with the issue. Thanks for your dream!
