which engine for Simplicity

I'm ready to buy a Regent 18/38 or the 20/38. Is there one of them that is considered better than the other engine wise? I know from the book that the Kohler is a Courage, but what is the model name for the B&S?

I had financing done and was ready to buy a JD LA145 until I read all the glowing reviews about the Simplicity, sure glad I waited a couple of days.

I believe you will not get the better vangard engine in that model,so I think the courage would be the better choice.

Just went down this route 3 weeks ago. Wanted the 20hp (B&S Intek) local dealer did not have one and would have to wait until next year. He had two Kohler engine units in crates. I bit the bullet and went with the Kohler. Very happy with the mower cut is really nice. With the 20 hp unit you get and hour meter and 12v dc outlet which are options on the 18hp Kohler model.

I went with the mulching kit over the bags and am happy I did. Clobbers less of the garage.

The engine code says 1971 model (June 24 1970). It is simple to hook up, the long rod goes from the outer hole in the governor lever to the carb throttle shaft. The spring hooks to the j shaped tang on the control plate, the other end goes to the second of the three small holes in the lever.

This is a very old thread, things have changed at Ariens. The units sold at Home Depot are rebadged Husqvarna/Poulan/Craftsman and certainly not up to their usual standards. The average consumer simply will not pay for the traditional quality although long time Ariens fans such as myself will step up to the plate and go for the dealer only models. Having said that, it appears all models are getting an Ariens branded engines which likely means Chinese. With my experience with MTD's Powermore crapola, I will stick with an older model and repower with Briggs if necessary if and when I need a snowthrower, certainly not at the moment in southwestern British Columbia lol.

Thanks for the info. I exchanged my Regent today for a Broadmoor. You can adjust the transport height, and, of course there are many other upgrades. I did have to go to an 18" turning radius versus the 12", but the extra features seemed worth the trade off. The dealer charged me $3600 plus tax for the 20/44. That price seemed reasonable. One of the things this dealer does is a little different - he takes the break-in oil out of all his tractors and puts in fresh 30 weight....so this is why he doesn't worry about changing the oil within the first 5 to 8 hours. I'm still going to, though. I see that Briggs strongly recommends 10W30 synethic oil, even over its own for the Vanguard. Doopstr - thanks again for your reply. You are fortunate to have the early model 07 Regent that allows you to make some adjustments to the transport linkage. I sent Simplicity an e-mail asking them why they changed this design - no reply as yet. In the end, I paid a little more for the Broadmoor than a Deere X304 (fine tractor). If I wasn't so pleased with how the Simplicity was built and how dealer treated me, I would have ended up with the Deere. Note, I do plan on moving in 2 years, so the extra money spent will work out well on a bigger lot. I think this forum is unequaled as to the amount of knowledge provided to everyone by those who read and reply to various posts. Thanks again to those who helped me out.

The small one. The stream is angled forward, in any case. It's a small kitchen. -- I like that you have chosen the single hole Simplice faucet instead of the two-hole version. It has a much smaller diameter handle "tube" and that makes it lighter looking, not as heavy as having two pillars on your counter. You don't need to install the plate under it. The pause button on the handspray wand is very handy, according to a friend of mine who has this pause (and a Simplice). He says it's deceptive: one might think it's just as easy to touch the handle as it is to press the pause button. Not so. I haven't asked him to describe this in more detail, so this is all I can say about the pause button. Hth

Hello Vanole - that 12v DC outlet sounds handy ... but what is it intended for ?

coffee / beer warmer ?
flood lamp ?
portable air compressor perhaps ?

Thanks, I think I am going to buy it today. My dealer says he can get me a 20/38 from another dealer in the area, so I'm leaning in that direction. I think I would prefer the hour meter also, so I could keep up with the scheduled maintenance better.

I'm also going to have a mulch kit installed on it at the dealer so it's good to hear you are happy with yours. I may also get a snow blade or blower for it later so I'm thinking the bigger engine sure won't hurt. lol

cjett: I have an older Simplicity that I bought used in 2005. That machine is a tank! I've since then purchased a Johnny Bucket Jr for my unitl This might be something you want to check out as opposed to the regular Simplicity blade. You can also get a blade from Johnny Bucket too, or have a combination of bucket and blade. What is the price of the Simplicity blade from the dealer?

The Johnny Bucket link dose not say that it will work for the Regent, or did I miss it somewhere? I have not seen the price for the blade from Simplicity, but I think my dealer told me and I forgot the price, as usual.

My Regent 20/38 should be delivered on Friday or Monday. Think maybe I will go out and water the lawn.lol
