England - Gertrude Jekyl Garden
Comments (0)We just got back from 3 weeks driving tour of England and Scotland. My favorite garden was the Gertrude Jekyl Garden in Northern England on the Island of Lindesfarne. The Island is reached via a causeway that is under water several hours a day, so be sure to check the tide tables (on the internet or posted at the entrance) before driving over. The Island itself is quite beautiful, sparsely populated with ruins of the old priory, a small village and a beautiful hilltop castle. The Gertrude Jekyl Garden is a small stone-walled garden in the middle of a vast open area across from the castle. It was recently restored to its original 1905 state and includes both perennials and vegetables. Bright yellow and orange calendulas grow next to artichokes, climbing beans on bamboo pyramids beside blue cornflowers. There is a cool breeze and the salty scent of the ocean. It was quite sunny the day we were there, but the 3 of us were the only ones in the garden -- most of the people were there to explore the castle and I don't know if they were even aware of the tiny garden. There is a feeling of isolation and timelessness when sitting on the stone bench in the garden, and it was a place I will long remember....See MoreDoes Tess of the d'Urbervilles look nice with Gertrude Jekyll?
Comments (9)I have this free app on my iPhone that makes it really easy to create photo collages, which helps me visualize how to design the garden and how plants will look together. It's called Pic Stitch. Here is a collage I just threw together of Tess, Gertrude and then I added in Archduke Charles because it's my favorite pink and red rose. Although this may have been very cruel of me if you like the look because I'm not sure Archduke Charles will grow in zone 5. Actually, my hat's off to you because I'm not sure I would even try to have a garden in zone 5! I don't know how you do it! All of you in the cold regions... you're amazing! I should note that none of these photos are mine... they are all others' lovely garden photos from gardenweb. :)...See MoreGoogle is honoring Gertrude Jekyll today!
Comments (11)Oh, I wish I can edit my post but it's too late now! I've just now seen that bellegallica9a also posted on Google & Gertrude Jekyll. I wish I had seen it first. Sorry, bellegallica, it was inadvertent. If it makes it any better, I used that as an opportunity to ask about who inspired us for rose gardening, though I wish I had acknowledged bellegallica's post which unfortunately I didn't see at the time. Marlorena, I heard about that book and it sounds it's a good basic coverage, just right for the introduction. I chuckled when I read your comment about 'Fred Loads'. :-)...See MoreGertrude Jekyll grown in a container
Comments (29)Thanks all. Sorry I'm late answering. Sean your Gertrude looks beautiful. Thanks for including pictures. So interesting to hear how everyone gardens. I'm too lazy to work so hard on the potting soil but I imagine yours will do well. I know some mix their own. Good luck on getting your own house. towandaaz, I do remember pictures of your Eden. So encouraging and tempting. Please do share more pictures of roses in containers. I never tire of seeing them. mustbenuts, yes, large containers are so important for roses. I love seeing the roses in containers along your walkway. Again so encouraging. Tiffandrew, yes I do reposition my roses all the time. Easier than moving furniture:) clarkjpz and kcandmilo - Good for you guys. I think sometimes we forget gardening is supposed to be fun. We were meant to garden and it doesn't have to be perfect. It's not a race or a competition. Just enjoy it....See Moredublinbay z6 (KS)
