JD420 power steering hook-up

I've bought the whole p/s assembly, control valve,lines,cylinder, and etc from a 420JD and I want to put it on my 1855MF. I need a picture or something so I can see how it was hooked up on the JD. My MF has the same hydro as the JD so this should be a do-able deal. I plan a redo on the ole 1855MF once I get all my ducks in a row, that'd be the best time to install the p/s.

I'm no JD expert but I'm willing to guess that the 420 has hydraulic lift for the mower deck and auxilliary hydraulic circuits also.

If so, then it will be equipped with a hydraulic pump to look after all these things, including the power steering. The hydrostatic pump will be used exclusively to drive the tractor in forward and reverse and has nothing to do with the other hydraulic circuits.

In order to put power steering on your Massey, you will have to add a pump. The easiest way to do this would be to install a belt driven pump from a car.

Connecting it all up isn't very difficult. The hydrostatic control module that you will be fitting your steering wheel to, should have four connections on the bottom of it. One connection goes to the pressure side of the power steering pump and the other one to the return side. The other two lines go to the steering cylinder. If the tractor turns left when you turn the wheel right, just switch the two steering cylinder lines at the control module.

The hydro static pump operates the mower lift and 3 point hitch on my ole MF same as it does on the JD's. In fact, I think they both use the same hydro-- Sunstrand HT90. I guess what I need to do is find a parts picture of the JD's hydralic system and I think I can figure out how to do it from there. I made a goof too, it's from a 400 JD, and is actually a power assist type of steering so I'll be able to use the original steering sector and tie rods. I've had my ole 1855MF since 94, bought it from the dealer that had taken it home new for his own use. My only complaint is that you can't hardly turn it with the FEL bucket full of sand-dirt-etc. I bought a 445JD today so can use it while I'm redoing my ole 1855, one way or another I'm going to put power steering on her. I'm planning on completely stripping the tractor-new paint, new motor, and rebuild the hydro. At over 2500 hard hrs it deserves a little TLC and I plan to give it to her.

Re: Refilling with synthetic 5W-50 oil: I replaced the input shaft last year on my Tuff-Torq K51. At the recommendation of the tech who helped me order the parts, I refilled it with synthetic 5W-50 (Castrol). He advised this is the standard fill in most of their units now. I haven't noticed much difference in performance with the exception that it seems to run cooler. It is reassuring to know there's a high performance synthetic oil in the unit when I'm towing my heavy core-aerator around the yard.

I've got the HF Solar Fan installed in my 6x8 HFGH. It is slightly under-powered for the GH, but I also have an AC electric box fan hooked to a thermostat. I found that using a roof-panel was counterproductive b/c the Solar Fan (installed at the apex, above the door) would just suck the air from the roof-vent straight out the front (IOW: No cross-ventilation). That's why I ended up w/a screened panel (in the back) and a box fan, and I closed the roof vents. On Hot Days I leave the door open (and have a screen hanging in the doorway). On not-so-hot (sunny winter) days, the Solar-fan seems adequate to meet my needs - even with the back-panel closed up w/polycarbonate. No fatalities - Yet! We put a page together describing the installation, see link below. I highly doubt that *one* HF Solar Fan would be sufficient for the 10x12 GH, but it seems "adequate" for mine. As always, YMMV... BTW - The "controller" for my HF Solar Fan died after one season. DH, the Engineer, jury-rigged a new controller. I'll have to update the page to describe it but he essentially kept the HF controller as a thermostat, but rigged in a separate controller that diverts the electricity from the solar-panels to the storage battery. Woah,,,, time out... It's not possible to accurately guess what is wrong with the steering on your truck over the internet. It's also not possible to do it over the phone, if you would try to call a shop and ask them how much is it to fix it without them doing any testing. In fact, it's SO WRONG to go about it that way that anyone that attempts to give you a price without first diagnosing the problem is the place to stay away from because they don't know enough about the system to know they can't guess a price! I'll show you how good it is to have someone guess without seeing the truck. I will guess the belt fell off the pump, that will be about $80.00. Now being serious that is only one of the most obvious things that need to be checked and confirmed as ok, or not ok. From there nothing short of a full inspection of the steering system which includes attaching a pressure tester is going to lead you directly to the answer. So find a good shop, with good techs, and pay them to diagnose the truck, then pay them to fix it correctly, and you will get value for the money that is spent.

I rode as well as my kids, a trike made from a 7 hp Techumseh engine , it had the cpmet belt system to a shaft that had a chain drive to a diff rear. rpms increase the pulley changes ratio It was a blast to ride but a little hard to steer, I suspect the rear with the diff was some yard mower rider type, another place to look for/find parts and drives is the Jeg's catalog for hotrodders, they have a jr dragster thing that you can glean ideas from. The trike had [?] abesto strips on bands on each rear side of the axle diff to help steer, a straight line stop meant both grips needed squeezing... My advise basd on experience, upgrade to disc brakes...My mom was showing off for company one time as a man was throttling it and starting to move then deaccelerate to steer, ya need throttle to steer and also needed to slide a bit... well mom sits down cranks the forks left to miss her car and yanks the throttle open being a long forked trike, it went straight to her new LTD and put a long gash in it...Boy were all us boys glad she done it to her car and not one of us..I think too much power is better than not enough cuz if the kid goes up a hill and not enough power it may roll backwards while if it had enough power it could dig itself a blocking hole til the kid decides the next step and catches his/her breath....
