Trudi - Hope you got the gushy email of thanks I sent to you last week. I only sowed 24 of my seeds since it's a little late in the year to be planting tomato seeds and that many plants will be plenty for us anyway. I sowed just a few of several kinds. 23 have germinated and I think I would've gotten all 24 if our puppy hadn't explored my containers a bit. I'm sure tomato seeds have a reputation for storing well, so I will plant more of them next spring. Thanks again. : )

    Thanks Trudi!!
I'm sending you a list but I'm confused by the reference to both IND and DTM at the same time? Then also what is DET? If that's Determinate than what is DTM? Oh my gosh....
I know what determinate and indeterminate mean but I'm not following LOL!

    Hi Vera!

All vegetables have DTMs but they are either IND or DET. (there are also some semi-dets but I don't have any of those varieties here.)

IND means Indeterminate, this variety makes ever-growing canes.

DET means Determinate, this variety makes canes which have limited growth, they often also crop most of their fruits over a period of a few short weeks. This is ideal for canning as the bulk of the fruits are available at the same time so you can do a big batch or two and then yank the plants.

DTM means Days to Maturity and is an estimation of how soon the first fruits are ripe after a four inch seedling is transplanted into the garden.

    Hey Trudi,

I just followed your link on the "WSing Peppers and Tomatoes" thread.

You sent me WinterSown.org seeds already, but I didn't know you had a specific tomato list to pick from. If I send you back the mixed tomato seeds, can I pick a couple off your list. My vegetable garden is only 60 sq. ft., so I don't even need six varieties (6 plants may be pushing it, LOL!)

    Thanks, Bonnie

Lisa, All SASEs that have arrived here are filled and gone--I take care of these very promptly. At WinterSown.Org I offer a tomato SASE which sends six packs--but you won't know what they are until you get them. Through internet garden forums I sometimes offer the "Your Choice Tomato SASE".

Because I don't have your empty SASE here you can send another one to the address above with a list and I will fill it.

Question: Do you know if it's OK to grow tomatoes on West if seeds were collected on East?
    Thanks

There's no problem with growing seeds saved from different regions. All my OP seeds are cleansed with chlorine-based products so there's no external pathogens to be transferred to any soil.

Obviously, the climate on the west coast is a bit different than the east coast, but not so different that it effects growing methods.

You'll have an excellent success with tomato seeds from Long Island.

Thank you, Trudi. I was worried not about external pathogens but about plants adjusting to the climate. I usually try to buy seeds from the local companies.
Not sure about tomatoes but I found out that if i plant garlic that i bought from some nonlocal company, first year i don't have good success but when i plant it second year using cloves grown in my garden i get much better crop.

Ahhh, I understand. Seeds aren't plants, but they will become plants. Garlic cloves aren't seeds, they are bulbils which grow and produce more bulbils. Some garlics will produce topsets which can be broken apart and planted like bulbils, and some produce genuine seed which you can germinate like any allium. Seed forming garlic can become pesky if you don't deadhead it.

Your own garlic hasn't been treated with a sprouting inhibitor, that's why your own cloves produce bigger bulbs--they start their growth when they are planted. Garlic that you purchase for planting has been cleaned, sorted and stored. It is usually sprayed with a low-intensity (non-premanent) growth inhibitor to keep it from sprouting before it goes back into the ground. It can take several weeks with sufficient rain or watering to cycle the inhibitor from the garlic before it can start growing.

You can use the Winter Sowing Method for starting your tomato seeds to provide natural, acclimated germination which will have them growing in tune to your local climate. I won't start my tom seeds any other way.

Good. Trudi, when do you start your toms? Do you put your "mini-greenhouse" in full sun (if we can say it about winter day, but sometimes we can have sunny days in winter) or afternoon or morning sun?

I usually sow my tom seeds around mid February to the end of the month. They go outside in their containers in a sunny location--full sun all day.
