lava rock mulch and PH

I have a small 'jade butterflies' ginkgo and a vine maple planted in the yard. There are cultivated areas around the tree set off by bricks and mulched with red lava stone. I don't use bark mulch around these becuase cats leave waste in the mulch - they dont like the rocks as much.

I've read that the sand that washes off the stone is inert so it doesnt affect the PH of the soil. but that if you test the PH of lava sand it is very alkaline. I don't want to make my soil more alkaline than it already is.

Will the sand affect the soil PH or not?
