mysterious liquid-filled yellowish balls in soil
Comments (139)Some slow release fertilizer contain actual liquid inside the balls. You can literally “pop them” and liquid fertilizer will come out. They aren’t eggs, and i’ve seen some come in gray and yellow colours but i‘m sure the whole rainbow exists. Someone mentioned root nodules, which would only be the case if they were directly connected to the root and looked like a hard, solid tuber inside (these are common but not limited to alocasias and calatheas for example). Fungus gnat eggs are practically microscopic, and unless your plants have direct access to the outdoors it is unlikely (but still possible) for it to be snail or slug eggs. What most of you are seeing are simply slow release fertilizer, if it’s truly bothersome you can buy organic potting mix that doesn’t contain any. Any generic potting mix from your nursery or garden centre, such as promix and miracle grow will contain these fertilizer balls and likely already in the soil your plant comes in from the nursery or store. You can literally sift through your new bag of potting mix and find them. If you truly believe them to be eggs, again unlikely, scoop them out and wait for them to hatch lol. You probably will not have bug babies but maybe you can gain some peace of mind....See MoreAutomatic watering for self watering containers
Comments (17)Worked out the cheapest, most compact and most simple automatic watering system for me. Uses 3 buckets, one float valve, simple barbed fittings and clear 1/2" tubing. There are no penetrations below water level and no alterations to planters. Top bucket only holds 5 gal, so you can hook up to larger tank if you desire. Use only clear tubing to detect any air bubbles. I am going to use Hudson valve to feed top bucket when away from home. Used 3 Lowe's buckets. Top Bucket - no alterations Bucket 2 - Cut off top below the expanded "ring" for spacer to lift top bucket up additional 2 3/4". Discard bottom. Bottom Bucket Installed 1/2" US Plastics #23136 float valve slightly above desired water level. Installed barbed elbow on float inlet. Installed clear 1/2" tubing from elbow over the top of top bucket to reach bottom. (Siphon action feeds float valve on bottom bucket) Ran 1/2" tubing from bottom of bottom bucket through side (above water level) to barbed connector. Ran 1/2" tubing from the barbed connector to barbed "Tee" at top fill pipe of first container. Ran 1/2" tubing from "Tee" to bottom of fill tube. Tubing runs from bottom bucket to "Tee" on first container, to "Tee" on second container, to "Tee" on 3rd, etc. (Last container doesn't have "Tee", tubing runs directly from last "Tee" to bottom of container fill tube. Primed siphon of container tubing by holding end of tube in bottom bucket to garden hose. Put top bucket into bottom bucket and fill. Primed siphon of top bucket to float valve. Note: Fill planting containers first, as the siphon action to the float valve only supports a small but adequate flow rate....See MorePop Bottle Pots!!
Comments (20)Just curious how everyone's plants and cuts are doing that tried out the PB pots? I got a surprise box of rooted Hoya's from a friend and so far since I put each in a PB pot I have new growth on campunalata, shepherdii, solaniflora, onychoides, engleriana and lacunosa. I have cuttings of lacunosa 'Ruby Sue' trying to root in 2 different PB pots. The cuts are perking up and I haven't lost any of the cuttings. I put them to root right before July 4th. I haven't checked to see if any have rooted yet. I don't want to disturb them but the perking up leads me to believe they are starting to root. I'd like to hear if any of the rest of you have had the same luck with your pots. Happy growing!,,,,Debbie...See MoreNote to self: the grass is not greener on the other side.
Comments (49)I feel all your frustrations in finding the perfect fridge. I replaced mine last month, not planned, my 25 cu ft Amana SD, bottom mount freezer lost its compressor. For the second time. The compressor had failed in the refrigerator the day before we closed on this house 3 years ago, and the seller had the compressor replaced - offering us either the repair or a credit. I chose repair as the refer was just 6-7 yrs old, and after all, Amana was once the gold standard....maybe not now ;) The choices, while food was being held in the garage in a spare a divorcing friend is storing here (I've stopped complaining about the space his things are taking), weren't great. A small coastal community and my choices had dwindled to Sears, Home Depot. Learned there is no local service for LG, Samsung. An hour away, I found a 25 cu ft Kitchen Aid FD, bottom mount, water and ice inside with a warranty that beat all the others. In the uncrating and installation, I saw the wine rack was packaged as Amana, some of the door shelves packaged as Whirlpool. It's fine. It doesn't give me a thrill as I walk into my kitchen but the storage seems to be working out and while I load from the left, I'm not automatically reaching out and not finding a door handle as the first few days ;) I discovered when initially transferring my food, there is an alarm for an open door.......See Morediggerdee zone 6 CT
